Hey anyone remember Sora from Digimon? What was her deal with the helmet?

Considering the dangers these children face day in and day out, that is likely the most reasonable choice of wardrobe among the cast.

That's a helmet? I always thought that was a hat. Heck, from what I remember from the Digimon movie, Tai even said it was a hat. (Of course maybe the dubbers believed it was a hat. I don't know)

I think the bigger question would be, why the hell did she marry Matt?? Seriously, I always thought she and Tai had a thing going on, and at the end of the second season, she ends up with Matt. What the hell?
I know for a FACT it was a helmet in one episode, she beats it like a drum while she and Joe chants for Bakumon to lose his power.... but someone else just said it's inconsistent what it is.

No my friend the bigger question is how the hell did Matt go from being a rock star to A FUCKING ASTRONAUT! Out of no where, he's never even had aspirations of space travel...

Even more important to me was who the hell Kari ended up choosing to bang, TK or Davis. I was probably one of the 5 people in the world rooting for Davis.
Make that six. Davis and Kari forever!

It's actually inconsistent on whether is it a rigid helmet or a hat. They use it as a drum in one episode, but it others when she takes it off it becomes flat like a hat, and she wrings it with her hands.

If you want an explanation as to why she wears it, I have no idea. It probably has something to do with her tomboy attitude.
tis a magic hat...

but it wouldnt surprise me if sora was retarded, choosing matt over tai.....

Is that a fact? Shit! It must of been one of those "blink if you missed it" moments.... I seriously just finished Adventure and never saw that >.<

I am NOT re-watching 50 episodes just to find it though, the animation and music in this show really haven't aged well. I swear to God if I hear "Hey Digimon! Hey Digimon! Digital friends to the boys and girls" one more time I'm going to stab someone in the eye.
Yeah it was probably a blink and you miss it scene. A quick Google search says that it happens in episode 35 if you want to see it for yourself.

EDIT: Found this picture

Like I said, they were inconsistent with what type of hat it is.

I can't say I have a lot to add to the discussion, I just felt obligated to post in a thread that contained the words "remember" and "Digimon" in the title :)

On topic (what little I have to say about it): I never really thought of it as a helmet, I thought it was just a hat of some sort. Now that you mention it, it is a little weird, maybe it's one of those things that make sense in Japan but translate badly to us westerners?

As the guy above me posted, it's pretty inconsistent. Unless...IT'S A MAGICAL HAT!

Well riddle me this ladies and gents.... Seeing as how it being a helmet was required for a major plot point in one episode, doesn't that imply it was meant to be a helmet and not a knit cap?

Ya know theres an episode where shes crying and Tai is trying very hard to make her not cry while Matt just leans against a tree and is all like "Dames, sometimes they just gotta let it out."

Yeeeaaaahhhh lets go with the guy that has trouble properly expressing his feelings, cause he's totally not going to grow up to be a violent jerk.... no way!

I figured it was just plain old japanese accessory-ism that is never related to anything practical at all.

Wearing goggles on your head when you never swim or fly is equally pointless, and if I remember correctly there was actually one of those people in that show as well.

Oh, I love this thread. There's too much to quote so I'll just try to be in order.

1) Yeah, I also thought it was a hat. And even the whole Bakumon thing didn't make me think otherwise. I believed that it was just an extra sturdy hat. Like straw weave or wicker. That stuff is hard. Why she could wring it well... maybe she was extra strong? LOL...

2) Oh, too right about the Matt and Sora thing. That came out of nowhere. Everything was leaning towards Tai and Sora. Even when she was dating Matt, there was still so much more chemistry there. She should have broken up with him and chose Tai. God, I wonder if something horribly cliche happened between episodes and seasons. Like, he wouldn't admit his feelings and she was tired of waiting.

3) Keep in mind that I'm a canon shipper above all... but I had to root for Kari and T.K. There was just so much chemistry there. Sure, it was obvious Davis was really into her but she was not receptive. And honestly, it was because he came on way to strong. He sees her laughing with an old friend, gets jealous and says she's his girlfriend. Hello... NO! She has to get the memo first, sweetie.

It's an anime, people wear stuff that would look weird in real life all the time.

Well... Okay first, yeah you are entirely right.

But to be fair, (I'm only one episode in to 02) he's only used the possessive verbiage in the safety of his own mind, and it was calling Kari "his girl".... which yeah, borderline creepy. but the generally tone of it was Davis has been barking up her tree for quite a long time and there's no episode to my recollection where Kari flat out tells him no or rejects his advances.

Also, being 13 when this came out and... well, making a total ass out of myself because I didn't know how to properly express my feelings back then (putting it mildly)... it was impossible for me to NOT want him to finally succeed in winning her over. Who am I going to root for at that age? TK- the guy who can casually walk up to a girl and have friendly chat with her or Davis, the guy that's trying ssssssooooooo incredibly hard and getting no where.

Tai's goggles I can buy as a fashion statement. It doesn't make him look- to put it bluntly- mentally handicapped. Sora's helmet is like if she was wearing one of those construction workers glow vest during the middle of the day just to go to the store to pick up milk.

Also.... Mimi's cowboy hat? She was a spoiled rich kid who didn't want to be in the sun, plus it went with her dress.

In the Japanese version, Mimi normally lived in America, her hat and entire outfit is meant to make her look more American-ish.

As for the goggles, they're supposedly a thing boys think makes em look cool in Japanese culture.

For some reason I want to say it was something to do with her mom. I think she wanted to rebel against here girly ways by looking as tomboyish as possible. I could be wrong.
I think your right. She just wanted to be a tomboy.

I re-watched the old Digimon movie on VHS not too long ago and that info sure solidifies the answer.

....is it sad that the Japanese answer to making someone look American is to put a cowboy hat on them?

Japan lacks what we know as political correctness. Stereotypes and such are broadly used and for various things...in a non-offensive "it's true enough" kind of way.

They don't speak to Americans when they give her that hat, they just try to signify her as that to other Japanese people...and a cowboy-like outfit is a pretty good way of doing that.
