Hey anyone remember Sora from Digimon? What was her deal with the helmet?

3) Keep in mind that I'm a canon shipper above all... but I had to root for Kari and T.K. There was just so much chemistry there. Sure, it was obvious Davis was really into her but she was not receptive. And honestly, it was because he came on way to strong. He sees her laughing with an old friend, gets jealous and says she's his girlfriend. Hello... NO! She has to get the memo first, sweetie.
Well... Okay first, yeah you are entirely right.

But to be fair, (I'm only one episode in to 02) he's only used the possessive verbiage in the safety of his own mind, and it was calling Kari "his girl".... which yeah, borderline creepy. but the generally tone of it was Davis has been barking up her tree for quite a long time and there's no episode to my recollection where Kari flat out tells him no or rejects his advances.

Also, being 13 when this came out and... well, making a total ass out of myself because I didn't know how to properly express my feelings back then (putting it mildly)... it was impossible for me to NOT want him to finally succeed in winning her over. Who am I going to root for at that age? TK- the guy who can casually walk up to a girl and have friendly chat with her or Davis, the guy that's trying ssssssooooooo incredibly hard and getting no where.
Oh yeah, that is right. He made the claim in his head before stalking over and demanding that T.K. tell him who he was to Kari/how he knew her. Which isn't actually good but better than that.

I believe I was near that age when it came out and had no real thoughts there. I did start to like Davis more than everyone else 'cause they were all giving him such a hard time about stuff but that was it. But I can understand your deal.

Japan lacks what we know as political correctness. Stereotypes and such are broadly used and for various things...in a non-offensive "it's true enough" kind of way.

They don't speak to Americans when they give her that hat, they just try to signify her as that to other Japanese people...and a cowboy-like outfit is a pretty good way of doing that.
Well... I've heard in the pass the sole reason sterotype exist is because it's the easiest way for the human brain to process information. I'm not quite sure if that's true or not.... But I tend to assume all sterotypes regardless of what it is have some degree of truth, hence why they exist at all. The important thing is having the knowledge that they're not always true.

Still after sitting through english dub's Mimi, I have to hope the original Japanese portrayed her in a better light... Cause really, Mimi as the representive of western culture? *shudder*

Mimi is pretty shallow and superficial and stuff in the original version too, she's a pretty stereotypical "girly girl" style chatracter. She's not dumb though, and she's strong-willed. I don't know if she had those traits in the dub or not.

She's not the portrayal of "western culture" in its entirety though, far from it, she's the portrayal of a Japanese person. One who doesn't live in Japan due to her parents being what would be seen as superficial or international types.

I mean it's Digimon, and Mimi wasn't a one dimensional character by any means, but judging from your response.... if she's suppose to be a Japanese raised outside of eastern influence.... it does kinda look negatively upon us that the one Japanese kid raised outside of Japan is so weak and whiny....

...That said of all of them she displays the most compassion and desire to not fight anymore by the end so that is something.

I also have to ask, you've never seen the dub? I plan on dipping into the subs for the original Digimon movies instead of watching the abortion of dub but... Why?

I don't watch dubs of anything. I'm a firm believer that all kinds of media, be it movies or anime or ancient Greek plays or the opera are best experienced in their original form. I'm a non-american anime fan so I'd have no reason watching it dubbed in English in any case as it is in just another foreign language to me. If it's gonna be watching anime in a foreign language that I understand, why wouldn't I watch it in Japanese? :p

Y'know, I just finished re-watching Digimon about a month ago and I didn't even pick up on the fact that it is totally a helmet. I assumed it was a hat.

What? Was there some kind of romantic subtext between Sora and Matt/Tai? I mean I know how it all ends up, but really? The only romance I noticed going on was the undeniable love between Matt and Tai.

I always thought it was a winter cap, whatever those things are called.

The better discussion here is why they couldn't be more creative with the name of her digimon's evolved state.

Birdramon? That's the best you could come up with? Laaaame.

I can't say for certain if Birdramon suffers from this but... Some Digimon's names were changed when they came over to the states. For the reasons that they do... Religious references and cultural context mostly. Same reason why a lot of pokemon names were changed when they came to the states. So yes... Some of the american names are pretty bad. Though some of the japanese ones can be bad too.

OT: I'm another one who just thought it was a hat. But the fact that it was inconsistent kind of shows how much they cared about the matter. From a design perspective it is handy though, helps to keep her recognizable which could be why she has it in the first place.

If I remember correctly Mimi had a different crest in the original Japanese (along with being less of a 'valley girl'). It was the crest of 'Purity' rather than 'Sincerity'. Or something along those lines. Mimi kind of suffered in character when moving from original to dub if memory serves. Funnily enough she was my favorite when I was watching this show when I was little. I'm probably a minority though...

I definitely believe she wore it for the purpose of confusing people. It's all a conspiracy involving cheap marketing ploys, wars between those who were helmets and hats, J.D. Salinger, 20 Gallon tubs of mustard from Costco, a feminist walking into a bar and causing 100 threads on the Escapist, people who wear hats, TF2 players, Men Without Hats, Karl Marx, the Wright Brothers, some two-day old Thai food, Forest Gump, Pokemon, Great Gatsby, lubricant, wedges of cheese, people who wear helmets, anime, Japan, tentacles, and DIGIMON DIGITAL MONSTERS DIGIMON ARE THE CHAMPIONS!
(Great, now it's stuck in my head)

OT: I have no idea whatsoever. Maybe they worked their powers of animation to make it a Special Hat. This special hat would be able to overpower the market through its thousands of uses (A technique that was perfected by the Ork "Choppa") and forms that would allow the manufacturer to become rich. Speaking of hat-based economics, I hear that hat would go around 10 refined.

You know what? I watched Digimon over and over again as a kid, but I never new just what it was. It's like the show itself couldn't decide whether it was a hat or helmet.

You know what really bugged me, though? T.K.'s hat. That thing was really weird, man. In the second series, his hat was a lot more bearable, but in the first one it's just... I don't even know.

That's a very good point, because the orignal text of anything is important... still I stand to ask, would you not rather enjoy it accurately in it's native language? As it is, when given the choice I prefer dubbed anime depending on the voice actors involved.

They did totally have a bromance going on... but by Season 02, Sora is pretty much all over Matt. I'm in Episode 5 right now, and he shows up and Sora lights up like a christmas tree for him.

In season one there a couple of major hint Tai has feelings for Sora though, particularly when he's so hell bent on trying to save her from Etemon... amongst others.

Ya know, just be thankful Escapist allows the place to go "shit". Most message boards sit their own stupid rules where if you speak out of line with the majority you get banned. At least here, unless you're flat out advocating something illegal or Ad-Blocker, you're free to make a topic about it.

As someone that was ousted from another messagerboard because of a cunty power-trip moderator, the Escapist is an AWESOME place to converse.... the problem isn't the site the problem is the people asking the same old shit.

I should really watch JesuOtaku's retrospective of it, cause I think she said the same thing... Purity probably would be a better fit for her, especially since she really didn't want to fight towards the end.... that said, Sincerity works just as well cause spoiled as she was she never hesitated to tell others what she really thought of them or their outfit.

What's with the 'leader' character always wearing goggles even though he never uses them. I know the goggles do nothing but come on, why have them if you don't put them all and be all flashy?

The short answer is probably trying to make each character model distinct. Or maybe an animator just had a problem drawing distinct hair styles.

Season 3 changed that with the main dude actually putting his to use. He needed them to shield his eyes whenever he traversed from our world to the Digiworld.

The mention of the Japanese version of Digimon reminds me to two things that I discovered that had been edited out of/changed for the dubbed version. It's sort of a credit that it didn't really leave things too confusing.

Both are from the same scene on season 1. Where the kids are trying to hitchhike after they return to the real world and miss their subway stop.

First, that scene where Matt seems to be embarrassed and blushing just because he had no real suggestions on what they should do? The original apparently had it that when Matt went out to hitch a ride, he ended up attracting a woman who was pretty much propositioning him as the price. He was supposed to decline and make up something so the gang didn't know but Mimi and Tai figured it out anyway and that's why he blushed.

Same scene is basically, the "cousin" Sora just happens to discover on the road is naturally a total stranger. Which actually makes a bit more sense what with the whole Girl Power thing she and Mimi shouted. And him treating all the boys like crap.

However stupid that hat was I guarantee season 2's Yolei's Hat-Helmet was even stupider looking.

Now ...why this discussion? Everyone in digimon had weirdness about them weather it was what they wore or their own mentality.

That's why I enjoyed it.

Quirkyness. Quirkyness everywhere.

I was under the assumption it was a hat, the first 13 episodes were made under the pretense that there would be no more after that and they didn't make a very solid reference guide to keep everything in line. So I think later they decided 'y'know that looks like it should be a cap'.
And so it was.
