Okay, so my national pride level is at an all time low, and I've started to seriously consider moving to Canada, I'd like to know from you guys personally, is it really that much of an improvement? Or is it just like the US only with slightly fewer insane people governing it?

Bah its not just Harper the Liberals are just as bad. The only decent candidate lately was Jack Layton (may he rest in peace) so we are pretty messed up right now. Other than an incompetent government, what else is new, Canada is great. We have really nice people, many are polite, we have Tim Horton's,(automatically makes Canada the best country in the world)and hockey. We have some amazing views. I've never been out west but Ontario has some great views. The 1000 Isles for example are amazing and we have many great national parks. Also I find Canadian girls to be some of the hottest out there. You the girls from California in the states and it makes you shudder they look so fake. Now obviously not all American girls are like that but you get quite a few fake ones, and we do have those in Canada as well. I just find Canadian girls to just look better and healthier.

Maybe. Depends somewhat on what you're looking for. If you happen to be really tired of politics and patriotism, then sure. the only politics I ever hear discussed are either American, or someone complaining about how Harper is a Bastard. For the most part we have some of the most boring politicians ever, and I see vocal patriotism so infrequently that it kinda weirds me out when even the most Liberal Americans feel the need to randomly state how neato their country is. The closest I've regularily seen is bitching about how America is dumb, which, to be fair is also annoying.

In regards to the only actual province I've lived in, British Columbia... It is indeed extremely pretty (though Washington looks about the same, to be honest)but my only real complaint woul have to be the booze. We have some expensive-ass booze in this province, and it is entirely restricted to liquor stores, the cheapest of which are all government-owned, due to the virtual monopoly they have on the stuff. So if you happen to be a raging Alcoholic, don't move to Vancouver I guess.

Is this a good time to mention that I'm a Bisexual male with a strong male preference?

Speaking of which, how's the LGBT community doing in Canada? Is it better up there or is there just as much homophobia as there is down here?

Ontario is "out east"!

Anyway, depends where you're coming from, where you're going to. I live in Canada's murder capital this year and it's... yeah. Mostly nice.

They LGBT is pretty good in Canada. There are regular parades, but I'm pretty sure that is the States as well. The homophobia isn't as strong in Canada as the states but it still exists. We do also have same-sex marriage legalized and we have for a good number of years. I can't really say how good looking the guys are because I don't really have any attraction to guys but the guys are pretty good looking.

Also thanks Wolfram for correcting me. I was tired when I posted that so I kinda messed up.

Well if you're gayish then you should probably go to Vancouver. Nice city when people aren't rioting. It saddens me to say that you probably wouldn't like Alberta very much because we are pretty much Canada's rednecks (not all or even a majority of us mind you, just more than other provinces). It's a shame too because we have the Stampede (if you're into that stuff), Banff, and only 5% GST!
Oh and we have the Calgary Flames! So if you want to cheer for the most awesome hockey team in the world (other opinons are probably wildly different), you should come here anyway.

On a related note, what are film schools (or universities with a good film program, I guess) like out there? I've been meaning to look into it.

If you're looking to get drunk every night, Halifax is the place to be. Most bars per capita in the country. You could get smashed at a different bar every night for a month, and if you decide to drunkenly stumble home there's a far less chance of you getting mugged than Vancouver, Toronto, or Montreal.

Honestly? Yes, especially BC. Absolutely gorgeous, the people are nice, and almost nobody wants to start wars.

There are a few in the western half that I know of, one in Vancouver and there's also SAIT.

Canada, at least the part of it that I live in (the southwest coast of BC), is pretty sweet. It's not perfect, but it's pretty great. I'm reasonably well travelled, especially within Canada and the US, and I've never been to any other place I'd rather call home.

In general, I think we are better governed than the US, and I feel like we are socially better off. That said, we tend to exhibit a number of the same governmental and social problems as seen in the US, just on a smaller scale.

Don't expect to come to canada and escape all the social ills that are plaguing the US.

We too were complicit in human rights violations during the afghanistan war.

We too have a ridiculous religious conservative voice in politics.

We too fail to meet our environmental obligations in favour of big oil.

We too allow corporations to have too much political influence and get away wioth too much.

We too have absurd copyright legislation and internet privacy bills go before parliament.

We just do all of the above on a smaller scale, and we tend to morderate and regulate ourselves enough that when we do these things, they don't get nearly as out of hand.

So it's not perfect. But I think, taken on the whole, it's pretty good.

All of our major cities have lower crime levels than their similar sized American counterparts, our post-secondary education is highly respected globally and costs a fraction of the cost, and we have finally elected a left-of-centre party (the NDP: Jack Layton's Legacy) as our official opposition.

If you're looking for work in the video game industry, you can't do any better than Bioware (Alberta), Relic (British Columbia), and Ubisoft(Montreal w/ a new branch in Toronto).

I've noticed a lot of these posts over the last couple of months and look forward to a discussion about the benefits of both countries. Cheers

Canada kicks some serious ass, but we've been falling behind a lot lately, mostly because our prime minister is an incompetent swine who's sole strategy is to either ignore any issue he doesn't like, or to abuse and exploit the system to carry out his personal agendas.

http://shitharperdid.ca/

And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

But yeah, our government is lousy, but we've got some really awesomely nice people, and the scenery is to die for, especially if you're in British Columbia.
Pretty much what he said; I used to be the proudest Canadian around, but the last several years I haven't felt that there's much to be proud of. Although it can't all be laid at Harper's feet, even though the man is a dick. The truth is I don't think we've had a decent Prime Minister since Trudeau, or at least not one with any balls or that didn't want to sell us out to the Americans or both.

On the other hand, I hear about some of the crazy wacked out shit that goes on down in the states and I think to myself, "Man, I'm glad I don't live there."

Montreal is also a great place to be Bi, or gay. Theres a whole section of town thats unofficially known as the "Gay Village" and while I'm hetero, my gay friends seem to find some nice looking guys there. Granted you may get bitched at by the occasional hard line Francophone but generally speaking the people are nice and Homophobia is kept to oneself.

That said taxes are pretty high and there aren't that many jobs to be had these days. I would say try to find a decent contact or two before moving, at least so you can get a steady job.

Hey, I'm a English guy and I've always wanted to move to Canada, specifically Toronto or Vancouver. Can anyone convince me that it's more than just a wild fantasy and it should be done?

Personally, I love this country. I live in southern Ontario myself. It's a pretty nice place despite the occasionally brutal winter.
