Anyone with medical knowledge out there? Googling for help didn't give me any answers and searching at greater depths came up with nothing.

I should probably get to the point! My sister recently awoke with blood having seeped from her thumbnail edge and dried, which she noticed after beginning to wash her hands. She had fallen asleep on her hands and they were numb when she woke up, but I'm pretty sure blood leaking from your nail isn't normally part of morning dead-limb.

So, anyone know if this is just something minor, an indicator of a problem or just not anything at all? It would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks for reading all of this.

Your sister has been infected with the rage virus. I'm afraid you'll have to put her down. I'm so sorry.

Must be the new version that results in convenient sequels.

Babba Yagga is the most logical option.

Probably ingrown and she just never noticed. I've got plenty of ingrown nails that don't even hurt unless I bump them hard, then they start to bleed a little. It's possibly that by lying on her nail for some time, blood was forced out.

No, 'dead limb' is just sleeping awkwardly and putting pressure on a nerve; when you wake up you might feel pins+needles or other paraesthesia because all the signals that nerve would be passing along have been inhibited. This is normal.

What is also fairly normal is catching a nail on something while sleeping, especially if you have long nails. This could cause it to bleed and when asleep you wouldn't notice it. People can accidentally do all kinds of crazy shit when they're asleep, and not notice.

These don't seem things to get worried about, to me, but if you're really worried and feel it might be something more, see your GP. They're trained to notice signs and symptoms which you might miss, the internet is no substitute.

[EDIT]

I should probably state that I am a physiotherapist, not a doctor.

She figured that herself, I'm just trying to rule out all other possibilities for her so that she is calm about it. It's very brute force, very "Wheatly" (after seeing the intro section of Portal 2, this will make sense), but it'll help.

Many thanks for this post, I can just quote you off to my sister and she'll likely be very relieved that this is 99.9% a normal thing. Unless she likes drama and I don't know it, but hey, what are the chances?!

Does she bite her nails? Most people with that habit have bleeding around the cuticles after a while.

Might have caught a "quick" growing on the side of her thumb. Sometimes you get a small piece of flesh sticking out the side of a nail? They bleed a lot if you manage to rip it out. Hurts like a bee-hatch too.

Really if youre that worried for her, a doctor or a GP would be better than asking the Escapist forum.

OT: Could be a hangnail, im not sure what goes on with human fingernails because im usually busy biting mine off.

"My sister recently awoke with blood having seeped from her..."

I was mildly concerned about where that was going.

Anyway, she probably just scratched underneath the nail at some point. Skins thinner under there I think so its easier to catch it. If she ripped any skin around the nail that'll bleed like a fuck-face too.

Wait, there is another way...

I vote you upgrade her to a chainsaw.

She's got a fear of germs and biting nails would be very "unclean", I imagine. So, I imagine that's not the cause.

Good effort, though; I wouldn't have thought of that.

You never know, someone here could be a bored GP...

SEE. THE. DOCTOR.
No medical advice given from some anonymous person on the internet is any kind of substitute for a qualified individual with an M.D. If you really want your sister to be safe, take her to someone who knows what the fuck they're doing.
