Proper grammar and spelling, and learning to use the Search button will help you avoid Phonic-Nazis and Deja-Nazis.
Also: Don't be a douche to people who are coming to this site just for a popularity contest, because then you're just an elitist douche.

Other then that: just be a normal, nice person. Respect the MODs (They're awesome), and read the forum guidelines and rules carefully.

Welcome to the Escapist!

ahoy there, and welcome to the Escapist!
erm, first thing is, is that amazingly people in the Escapist are far more mature than a lot of other gaming forums, so do keep that in mind... any stupidity/flaming/hate is easily identifiable and swiftly punished (i should know, i tried to make a thread dedicated to flame wars once, got a 3 day ban lol)
oh, and people tend to like being funny as well... so got a bit of a giggle gremlin inside of you? let it out and it'll be welcomed i believe :p

Let's see... Correct grammar, spelling and capitalisation. Check. Posted thread in the right forum. Check.

Looks like you'll fit in just fine.

Welcome to The Escapist.
Grammar is an issue, making sure you don't repeat a thread topic is a good one if you want to avoid "The Flam-o-tron" as I call it, which is basically people who hate repeat threads.

I'd also say, behave yourself if you join an RP, they get pretty angry bout stuff like that.

Feel free to add me if you want some more help. =)

We're pretty tame (for gamers XP) Try to spell things properly and use proper grammar. The mods will strike you down if you screw up. Cussing is allowed, but don't use it in excess. People are pretty friendly and very intelligent. A lot of intellectual discussions spring up as well as the random crap. There is very little flaming so just speak your mind. :p

Welcome to The Escapist.

You do fine as long as you remember the following:

"Opinions are like butts, everyone has one, and they all stink. And are hairy."

First things first:
*ahem*
Welcome! Welcome to Escapistmagazine.com! You have chosen, or been chosen, to relocate to one of our finest remaining Internet Utopias. I thought so much of Escapistmagazine.com, that I elected to establish my administration, here, in the Forums, so thoughtfully provided by our benefactors. I am proud to call Escapistmagazine.com my home. And so, whether you are here to stay, or passing through to parts unknown, welcome, to Escapistmagazine.com. It's safer here.
(Note: Not made by me.)

A few tips:
Try to avoid starting a religious thread. They always end in badly.
No VS threads.
You can't edit a poll into a thread, so be careful about that.
Pressing enter while typing a title for will post the thread. Be careful.
Use the Search button (Seriously, use it).
Edit:

I'd say yeah. It's a touchy issue, really. We just had this conversation in the IRC recently.
If you're posting a link to a video that's relevant to the discussion, then go ahead. The MODs will remove it if it's not relevant and/or stupid (That means no rick rolling).

If you're posting it just to get traffic to your videos, don't. That's the no-no part.
And I'd avoid making threads to start a discussion that 'just happens' to coincide with a video you made or posted. It would probably just be locked.

Yeah, make sure to use the Edit button, don't double post.
Spelling, grammer, punctuation as people have already said.
Try to avoid quoting someone simply to add "^^this".
Always go for necroing an old thread than creating a new one, it gives us all less hastle.
In a longish thread, it's OK to read the first couple of pages, then the last couple before adding an opinion. Just don't be suprised if someone leaps on you with a quote from page 16 to prove you wrong.
And try to stay away from Block'o'text posts, try and seperate them out with new lines

EDIT: Just realised you might not know... "Necroing" or "thread necromancy" refers to "reviving" a dead thread with a post. A dead thread is usually one that has not been posted on in over a week.

Mkay thanks. Wouldn't want to get banned on day one...Though I assume that happens more often than a hostage situation in Mexico.

Hi. Welcome. I'm not gonna tell you how to get along here like absolutely everyone else felt the need to, because that's kind of dumb. If you've ever posted on pretty much any forum ever, then you'll probably be pretty comfortable here. *thumbs up*

Oh, and rottenbutter, I'm gonna start a VS. thread. How do you like 'dem apples?

One of the greatest things about the Escapist is the general overall maturity of the posters. Be sure to do what everyone has said thus far (i.e. grammar, spelling, etc.) and you'll do great here. Be sure to not hold back when speaking your thoughts, sometimes nothing is better than giving that hard-to-say truth about a game or post to set someones mind in motion.

Welcome to the Escapist, enjoy the stay

This is one of the few online communities to actually realize how stupid "VS." threads are.
