Ever see something suddenly appear on sale that you were hesitant to buy at full price? I do that twice a week as Steam hosts their Midweek Madness and weekend sales. This weekend just gone Metro 2033 was on sale for £9.99. It's been sitting on my wishlist for about a month or so now and I looked at those three nines on the pricetag and it was stupidly tempting. However that worry disappeared yesterday as my wonderful girlfriend bought it for me as an Easter present and now I'm enjoying the hell out of it.

It's nothing how I expected it to be, it's miles better.

So Escapists, ever had one of these moments? I've got a dozen or so more examples of purchases like that. On the flip side have you ever bought something with full confidence and it turned out to suck?

Fallout 3: I remember all the hype at launch but thought it wasn't for me. When I bought it (GOTY for £15) my experience of RPG's was Fable 2 and that was it. I was slightly inhibited about a "hardcore RPG" thinking it might be difficult to get into. Well a week and 50 hours gameplay later I was hooked. I had done about 5-7 missions and just been immersed in the world of Fallout 3.

For me, I wait a REALLY long time, sometimes a year or more for a sale and finally give in and buy the damn game.

Next day, 75% off.

I rented Nier and Resonance of Fate thinking they were going to be sub par, I spent the next day doing Matrix style jumps, listing to the Song of the Ancients, and eargasming as i hear voice actors i know and love work their magic.

Kinda like this...where people will also post the opposite. Not bad, but can lead to arguments.

Well, I bought Deus Ex and Oblivion solely because I'd been told they were great, and I didn't enjoy either one.
GRR! My name is Oblivion. How dare you dislike it. RAWR. I IS FULL OF RAEG!

On-topic:

So...many...games...

Go with ones I've played/played again, recently, I guess.

Borderlands was waaaaaaaaaaay better than I expected, as I hadn't been following it. And the cover art and back-of-the-box drew me into buying it.

Majin & The Forsaken Kingdom gets this, too. Lots of comparisons to Enslaved, and I didn't really like Enslaved. But love Majin.

Dragon Age 2.

Not hard. I had really, really, really low expectations. Still wouldn't call it terribly good, though.

Okami was much cooler than I expected. I expected a little zelda-type adventure, not something that could ever be equal or possibly greater than Zelda *flame shield up*
Same with Bayonetta, MUCH better than Devil May Cry

Ninja Blade

It has no business being as fun as it is.
It really doesn't. It has QTEs up the ass, the main character is a ninja named...Ken, the gameplay is a total rip from NG, and the platforming is total shit.

WHY IS THIS GOOD AND FUN?

The italicized part is me answering my own question.

for most of my games to be honest. And i'm glad you are enjoying Metro 2033 so much. I thought it above average, but i felt like i was missing something from it. Then i gave it back to my friend who i was borrowing it from.

and no, i'm not quite sure what you mean...unless you are referring to my answer, which is minecraft (dude, i never expected it to be this good!), then i don't know what you mean.

something i've bought which went below my expectations... resident evil outbreak,(1 and 2, though i swear they are the same game). I got very annoyed as my 'team-mates', controlled by CPU, immediately ran off in random directions, picking up either random crap they'd never use or herbs (which they also refused to use, ending up with them dying). So yeah, i bought that, it was very cheap, but i was dissapointed.

to end on a good note, another game i bought because it was cheap that was better than i expected was "Obscure: Aftermath" for PSP. I found it quite entertaining, though it didn't quite instill much horror.

In a colourful blaze of magical friendship.
Avoiding that.

I'd have to say Sniper: Ghost Warrior, World of Goo and Halo Wars.

All games I didn't have much hope for but loved all the same.

Ghostbusters: The Video Game. Not a huge Ghostbusters fan and really wasn't expecting anything other than a time waster, but its such a damn good game, fantastic enemy and level design, fun gameplay and a story that actually gels well with the films.

On the flip side, I'd have to say F1 2010 for me. I played DiRT and GRID and thought this would be another sort of arcadey kind of game, instead it was a total sim racer with a brick wall for a difficulty curve, I found it really inaccessible, hard and as a result a total let down for me.

Actually Oblivion falls under that category for me. I only bought it cause it came with Bioshock, (both games were cheaper than one, go figure), and when I finally did get around to playing it. Holy crap.

Nine Inch Nails is probably the big recent one for me. I had always assumed they were a generic pump-out nu-rock band, but man was I wrong. Turned out they do insane industrial stuff. Listen to 4 Ghosts I :3
Aaaand obviously My Little Pony. That's a given.
