So I think just about everybody here is familiar with the hidden blade by now. If not, then let me enlighten you- the hidden blade is the weapon used by Altair and Ezio in the Assassin's Creed franchise in order to pull off quick, stealthy, one-hit kills on unaware enemies. It is quite a cool tool and is iconic for the series, not to mention that it is perfectly possible to create a hidden blade in real life, except for one thing. I may just have missed something here, but does anybody else wonder how exactly one makes a hidden blade "fire"? Do Altair and Ezio just press a button we can't see and the blade comes out of its compartment? This seems to make sense, but in every screenshot I see of Ezio exposing his hidden blade, his hands are bare, with no "firing mechanism" attached to the vambrace which holds the deadly weapon. Also, how does one assure that a hidden blade doesn't misfire and take off two or three of the user's fingers? These may be minor complaints, but I'm seriously wondering how exactly hidden blades function.

Any thoughts?

i'm sure this was answered a long friggen time ago, (considering last post was november of last year) BUT, in AC2 it's actually a ring on Ezio's pinky that he pulls, in doing so, it triggers a spring mechanism that releases the blade, the part i can't figure out is the retraction, my buddy figures, maybe a feather touch button, like a hair trigger to release the spring and retract the blade. to me, this sounds pretty good. seems like that could work. with the ring, however, you need to pull your hand BACK so the blade doesn't cut off your ring finger...this was the original way, because it wasn't a ring pull on the spring in AC1...that was DaVinci's new design in AC2 for Ezio.

Doesn't Altair twitch his hand when he brings out the hidden blade? Maybe it got something to do with that?

When not in use, the blade is hidden in a gauntlet on Altaïr's lower left arm. Altaïr triggers it via a ring on his little finger. This causes a gear system to eject the blade, hopefully into the neck or stomach of an enemy.

Damn, that's crafty!

srry for bumbing the thread if i am but i figured out how to make one with gears to the point were it will go out and lock but wont retrack back in. I took gears from my airsoft gun made a box for them that conects to the blade gaurd and have a wire attacted to the anti reversal lach. when pulled u release the revearsel latch and the blade spins out then it looks back in when the wire looses tension i am working on a way to make it go back up but so far springs dont work cause the gears are greavity feed this just make it a little more realistic then a free falling dagger.( srry for my spelling i am a horrible spelling.)

If you look very closely under the first red arrow there is ring that is attached to a rod that goes all the way to the back of the blade. That ring is attached to the ring on his finger by a string. When he pulls his finger back it pulls the string which pulls the rod out which releases the blade. There is probably something inside the holder that keeps the blade extended as lond as his finger is pulling on that rod.

Also, very inventive! It certainly looks like it goes well with the mechanics in the diagram
Leonardo Da Vinci, eat your heart out. xP

Really, though, I could probably think of something better if I had a few days to ponder.

If you're in to rationalizing video games, can you please give me instructions on making my own BFG, Portal Gun, Bio Gun, Plasma Rifle, and one of those Teleporting guns from UT? Plus, I'd like to know how all these damn animals can talk, and how people can jump multiple times their height in a plumbing uniform.
Oh geez. Don't be a jerk. The hidden blade is not comparable to any of those things. You're talking about things that are clearly impossible, compared to something that is totally plausible.

Seriously, don't be a prick.
Being a prick, and being a realist are two completely different things. I only used extreme examples to prove a very simple point: It's a game. This object can be rationalized in numerous ways, none more true than the next (Within reason.) If he seriously can't conceieve a way for this contraption to work, he shouldn't be playing an M rated game. Ultimately though, it doesn't need to be rationalized. Why? Because it's a damn video game.

Oh, and thanks for the welcome. Auf Weidersehen.
The sole point of your post on this thread was to point out that the entire thread is pointless. That makes you a prick from my view.

OT: I've actually seen on YouTube a two guys who have made their own Hidden Blades that work perfectly, and I think they both use the ring on the pinky finger as the trigger. They worked perfectly well too.

I'm pretty sure Ezio's blade activates when he bends his hand back, so that avoids the risk of him cutting off his fingers. The real question is how he gets enough force behind the stab to kill someone when the blade is attached to his wrist.
