recently i bought a sword from an antique shop and was looking at the details when i saw an insignia IO OF, i thought is was something for the freemasons until just now i was told it was independent order of oddfellows, an interesting group thats been around since the 1800s.
is there anything like this that happened to you or cool things that you figured out.

My grandpa saw a Confederate uniform for sale at some antique shop with our last name on it, but dismissed it as coincidence. Later he started doing genealogy research and found out we're descended from this guy [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Bell_Hood]. Epic missed opportunity.

Hm... Nope. Sure, there's plenty of Kemper stuff out there, and one of my great uncles was a grand dragon of the KKK, but nothing really important that I've ever found. Except the great uncle thing. There is that.

My last name supposedly indicates that I'm descended from King Arthur. Keyword, supposedly.

I know for a fact that I'm a decendent of <link=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_the_Conqueror>William the Bastard... That probably explains so many out-of-wedlock births in my family... *Sigh*

My mom told me that my grandfather was a member of the Free Masons, news to me
I lived next to a bunch of them, and regularly played in their parking lot, not that interesting.

As for me, they're is one thing, but i'd rather not mention it, it's nothing bad, but simply it would reveal where I live, and i'd rather not do that on the internet.

I found out that Geoffrey Chaucer is in my family history somewhere. I also discovered that I may or may not be descended from Robin Hood. They were talking on Discovery Channel about Robin Hood and his possible real names, since he most likely changed it to Robin Hood to protect his family honor, etc., etc. One of the names, I think it was Robert something, I've definitely seen in our family genealogy books, and that part of the family goes back to that time and place.

Wasn't Robin Hood meant to be gay? This is a third hand foggy memory so it could be any number of other historical figures. My relative (I forget what he is to me though), Commander Robert Halpin, ran the ship that laid the trans-atlantic cable that allowed communication England and the US.

I found out my grandfather was in the Freemasons. I always think about wearing the rings, and seeing if some Freemason will invite me to a meeting or something in the confusion. lol

I found out through a geneology project that I had ancestors who fought in the American Revolution, specifically as irregulars in the Carolinas. That was kinda cool. :D
