Can you elect to just not show badges altogether?

I think they're tacky, but all I seem to be able to do is rearrange them, not hide them outright.

I did when I first joined, up to my like 200th post

I didn't get what they were! So I just turned them off

So you can hide them. But how?

I know it's an obvious button somewhere and I'm just being embarrassingly slow-witted in not finding it, but it is what it is.

Sorry Misread the question.

Yes you can. Go to your profile page, and then select "Forum and Notification Options" under the box "Profile Options"

Its just a click away after that!

I really don't pay attention to the badge system here. But i do feel as if the escapist is complimenting me for being a member and making them thrive.

I'm doing a very poor job of explaining this, sorry sorry sorry: I do know you can check a box to not see yours or anyone else's badges, but what I'm asking is if you can just elect not to show yours, ie, even if you have badges and other people have the option to see badges turned on, they still won't see yours because you have them hidden.

Yeah, that's true. And on the other hand it's another form of communal ball-swinging, like post counts and the titles derived therefrom. It just seems gratuitous to me, and I'd just as soon not show my own. It's not like my own e-balls are presently very imposing, anyway.

I still thank Christ every day this site doesn't have 'signatures.' For the space of about three seconds I tried to imagine the flood of dark misquotes, anime gifs, and haughty self-promotion and blood spewed from my nostrils like a cheap special effect. Now I'm dizzy and everything sounds muffled, like it's coming from a long way away over a snowbound field. I'm gonna lie down now.

But... if you don't care about badges and you think they're tacky, why would you want to see other people's badges?

Because it isn't how the forum looks to me, it's how I look to the forum. I don't mind a bit if people are proud of their badges or have a few neat ones they like to show; I just don't want any myself, just like I don't want an avatar.

It's like how I don't begrudge people the right to bumper stickers, but I'm not putting any on my own car.

Okay, well the answer is - you can't.

If certain badges annoy you, once you collect a few you could just reorder them to put the ones that don't annoy you first in the list. That's about the best you can do. Although personally if I were you I'd just click "hide badges" and forget that the whole issue even exists.

I definitely agree that signatures are evil, but badges and avatars give a person some form of freedom and a means to put a face to a name.

But, to each their own.

I didn't know we could turn them off.

I don't think I will, now that I know. I've arranged mine in a way I like, aesthetically and personally.

Hmm, I don't think you can do that.

Maybe pm Virgil, he will probably know for sure.

Well, that's too bad. If I had my druthers, people would see my name, the button to message me, and my post. But that's okay.

I'd still prefer not to show any, but I don't want to turn badges off completely. I know people are proud of their own.

I hope I haven't gotten a ball rolling with this.

*Raise one eyebrow to the top of my hairline*

I suggest doing nothing so you never get any badges... otherwise just turn them off as previously stated and just be happy the forums dont look tacky to you and not give a flying f' what other people think. I mean its the internet who cares about mr anonymous 34953 anyways?
