so apparantly the people at CERN are getting close to proving the existence of the hypothetical Higgs-Boson particle, which causes matter to have mass. what are your thoughts?

Last i read it hasn't proved it, however it hasn't disproved it either.

Peter Higgs has been quoted as saying "I won't be going home to open a bottle of whisky to drown my sorrows, but on the other hand I won't be going home to open a bottle of champagne either,"

Personally i hope its right and they are on the money, because it could lead to some very exciting things for all of us and our understanding of the universe. Otherwise i guess the guys in physics will have to start all over again.

I prefer anyons, but it's cool I guess.

Seriously though, it'd be cool but far too early to say. Even if they are actually picking up an ultra-heavy particle (the man who came up with scientific terms for particle physics is a genius) and not just some equipment fault, they'll need to rule out a few composites. Though that said any particle with that mass would be a significant discovery. Either way, it's exciting stuff, nice to see the press are accepting that we've been up to things apart from the faster than light neutrinos thing. Now if only we can get them to look at somewhere other than CERN...

Also, I'm a bit of a physics hipster. I liked Bose-Einstein condensates before they were cool.
