I don't think this one artist's workload really has anything to do with Highguard sucking nor should they be blamed for it.
Nobody is making excuses, but it's not helping the case of how development went, and the fact Tencent didn't do dick at all, nor alleviate in any fashion.

You are always so quick to blame the corporate overlords and I dont understand it.

The Highguard team probably sought funding for their live service bullshit, and tencent just saw a chance to make a shitload of money if it worked. I would not blame the game being shit on Tencent at all when it was clearly a bad idea from the developers in the first place.

If this game became the next Apex or Overwatch people would be celebrating the fact that all these cool characters came from 1 person.

It's not hard to understand when it's somebody like tencent, or it's almost always the corporate screwing up. Especially with many of them going on that AI bullshit or live service "gravy train". I'm not trying to absolve the development team. Don't get me wrong, but it's not hard to tell who did what nd what was the major cause. The fact tencent didn't want anyone knowing it was them funding the bill, leads creedence to that theory. Tencent knows they are not popular, and a lot of the gaming public does not like them

Sony's recent events not helping either with the unjustified firing of Blue Point. Then Sony promoting one of their live service games immediately afterward. Which nobody is going to play. And then Sony's just gonna blame either the audience or the developers working on it. Take your pick.

Yes, the devs from Highguard had their own screw ups, but it still all leads back to poor management and poor sense of dollars from Tencent and the whole corporate and executive class side. If you can't figure that out or see the signs, we have nothing left to discuss.

These corporate fools will keep chasing the magic dragon, and keep assuming "this time will be different!". They never learn.

Pat and Woolie have some extra details.
Tencent secretly funded this game. They also only have one artist working all the characters and had her do the dlc at the same time. Christ, i really hope these artists and developers find a much better place.

How does that work when there was like 5+ outsourcing design managers?

Were they all managing the one artist or something?

29 Whole days longer than Concord, so that's something.
It also had more players AND didn't burn $400M.

And to be fair, it did try to spice up the hero-shooter mechanic.Too bad all those ideas failed. It's like trying to taste filet mignon, gourmet sandwich, and caviar at the same time; They might taste amazing indvidually, but taste like crap since there is no harmony

I mean the studio just had a bad concept from the jump man. Another shooter, another live service, and throw in a bunch of mechanics that make no sense

In order for a new live service game to succeed it basically needs to be the best fucking game ever made at this point, because there are so many live services with established audiences that you are never going to rip people away from them. And even if you did make the best game ever, you still will struggle to pull people off their other game.

What I think game studios and publishers fail to understand about this whole thing isn't that you are trying to get a player to leave...say Overwatch, for your Highgaurd game. You are trying to get the player to leave hundreds and thousands of hours, hundreds and thousands of dollars in skins and perks, and a long standing years and years long history that player has with that game. All for the hope that they'll come TRY your game, nevermind stick around and give you any money for it.

Highguard only survived a month because at least it was free.

Next game on the deathnail is Marathon. Which admittedly is having a much more mixed reception than HG got. Apparently Marathon has a bit of promise and the mode itself is fun, but there are a lot of other problems in that it's not balanced well, the shooting feels weird, and some people really hate the graphics because the neon industrial blandness really doesn't end up being that interested as a whole.

But it's Bungie and maybe that brings enough name brand behind it to keep it working for a while longer. But again it's also launching as a $40 game like Concord, and it's launching right after Overwatch revamped itself again which people really seem to like so......I don't know.

Marathon peaked with 140K players on steam which is...well Highguard peaked with over 900k so.........

Alas, poor WhatsItsName. We barely knew ye, just like The Other One and The Other Other One.

I wonder if Keighley is still waiting to accept our apologies

Bruh, your analogy is outside my budget.

Alright, how about this;

Trying to taste a costco hot dog, subway 6-inch sub, and $3 sushi at 7-eleven. Hope that doesn't cheapen the analogy for you.
That's why you're supposed to get a hot dog from the local coney (has actual flavor) and then combine it with a subway sandwich. Ya silly!

I just checked: Liz Truss spent more time as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom than Highguard (by March 12th) will have as an active game.

Do whatever you want with that information.

Honestly, while those are iconic high class food, they are not actually necessarily expensive.

Filet Mignon might be a select beef cut but any kind of cattle would produce some. Looking at the butcher around the corner, so not a super cheap option, that is 35€ per 500 g which should be several portions.

A gourmet sandwich is just a fancy sandwich. Shouldn't be more than 5€ even with fresh ingredients

And kaviar has quite thw price range. Google says it is 6€ for 50g of the orange one in the supermarket around the corner.

Now none of that is super cheap, but should be well in range for normal middle class households wanting something fancy for an occassion.
