So recently I've been playing Yume Nikki. My favorite thing to do is have Madotsuki sit in the corner of her room, staring at the wall -- while I sit in the corner of my room staring at her stare at the wall. I feel like I'm looking at myself.

Is/was anyone else on here a jobless, long-term shut-in who's unable/unwilling to leave their room? Why, and how do you get out of that lifestyle?

For me, it's a mixture of a sun allergy, social anxiety, and the fact that my college degree is completely worthless. I'm trying to improve myself by having a go at writing for a living, but its probably a long shot.

Huh. Interestingly enough, I was just talking about this with someone here.

But, as for me, I myself can be considered a hikikomori.

I have no clue how to get out of it, nor do I really care to get out of it.

I never leave the house anymore. But it's not like I'm socially awkward or a loner. From around 14 - 17 , I was out partying nearly every day, and if I wasn't partying , I was out somwhere with friends usually doing some illegal substance. Not the best life, But you tire of it quickly, at least I did anyway.
I'm a shut-in by choice now.

Heh, on one hand I realize that the world doesn't have much to offer. Not now in the age of wireless internet and infinite video games. Before I started shutting myself in, I'd done a lot of traveling all over the world (army brat), and none of it impressed me. But, I do wish I could get to a state of functionality. I want a job, but no one wants to hire a socially-inept freakshow, especially amongst hundreds of other applicants with higher CHA stats.

I work and go to school as necessary. Occasionally I leave the house to pick up a new game or see a movie. That's the extent of my excursions. Otherwise, I fit the description pretty well. As does everyone who I really care about, so it works out having us all talk online.

Hmm...

Jobless? Check.
Long-term shut in? Check.
Unwilling/unable to leave room? Not exactly.

I do leave my house, and not just for school. I'm fairly well liked by a few people, and I am on soccer teams. Apart from soccer though, I don't like leaving. Not due to social ineptitude or anything like that, but I just prefer staying inside. I could leave, party and things like that, but I have no desire to do so, so I don't. Live for yourself, right?

I'm not a shut-in. I do spend plenty of time in my dorm room because of all the reading and homework that is required for me at university, but I make the time to go out. I always have a group of friends to get dinner with, to go shopping, to see movies, etc.

Funnily enough, it's when I'm doing my 'geeky' stuff- watching Doctor Who, playing games- that I feel most alone.

I assume this is how other girls feel. I can make plenty of friends, just not geeky ones for whatever reason. My favourite hobbies leave me alone.

The problem will living for yourself is that if you don't play by the norms at least a little bit, you end up funemployed.

That, and if you made the mistake of majoring in the humanities.

I'm moving out in two weeks. I hope a fresh start will break all these old habits, but I'll probably end up just hiking-it-up in a new location.

Not a very social person, don't like parties and stuff, but not a shut in at all. Mostly go out to hang out with a smaller group of people.

Currently no job and not in school anymore which kinda sucks. But I've got a good enough understanding of myself I know when I need some social interaction to break up alone time. Don't get depressed, don't have any social anxiety, so I'm doing alright.

Things could be going a lot better for me, but could be a lot worse. So good luck to anyone who trying to improve their situation.
