Today April 15th marks a very sad day for Football/Soccer across the world where fans come together to mourn the unnecessary death of 96 Liverpool F.C. Supporters. I am writing this to make sure that those who don't know about Hillsborough understand.
It was during a match between Liverpool F.C. and Nottingham Forest at the Hillsborough Stadium on April 15th 1989 that the horrific events occurred.
Due to the poor management of the match many more fans than could possibly have fit safely were ushered into standing "pens". This caused immense pressure on the people at the front leading to a crush. Fans in higher stands pulled people out of the crush below and others were forced to climb over the fence at the front. At first Police and Ground Staff refused to open the gates to the pen and free people from the crush, however when they were finally opened there were many dead and many more injured.
In the aftermath The Sun newspaper printed a front page article stating that some fans robbed the dead and beat up police trying to save lives. This lead to a Citywide boycott of this newspaper in Liverpool. The Newspaper issued an apology however editor of this article still refuses to apologise for his lies to this day. The inquest after the events were also botched by the Government and No-One has been brought to Justice for the events.
Thank you for reading. Justice for the 96!
