Nothing solid yet, but it looks like we have not one but two Metroid games to look forward to. A traditional 2D Metroid game and...a continuation of the Prime Trilogy...excuse me a second.

Like I said, nothing solid at this point, but if they turn out to be true, I am going to be a very happy customer. Both a continuation of Prime and a traditional 2D one? Those both sound great.

Any thoughts on this? Do you really think Nintendo would make another Prime game? Or do they just mean it's gonna follow the storyline?

(Speaking of which, where do you think these games will take place in the Metroid timeline?)

I'm torn. Metroid is probably my favourite Nintendo IP, but most of Nintendo's offerings I've played in recent years (all on the 3DS, I don't have a Wii or Wii U) have left me disappointed. A 2D Metroid on the 3DS seems awesome but I'm wary because I've been burned before.

I know they never mentioned the 3DS, that's just my wishful thinking. And it seems like something they'd do. Classic Metroid on the hand held, Prime on the home console.

with all the emphasis they've gad on building the character model I doubt they'd want to make another first person game. I rather they do a classic Metroid on the 3DS and a Vanquish style game on the WiiU

So at this point we have two different types of Metroid games. We have the Prime style of Metroid game and we have the more traditional style of Metroid game.
Either the third style doesn't count because it only has one game or Nintendo is also pretending Other M doesn't exist.
I hope it's the latter.

Anyway, despite being a big Metroid fan, the comments in this article are a little too vague for me to get excited. But, if anything new Metroid Prime comes to the Wii U, then the Wii U will come to me. Although I'm gonna need a more solid confirmation before I roll up into a ball and start rolling towards the nearest store.

As for the timeline, I don't particularly care where a possible new game would fit. Just keep it away from Yoshio Sakamoto and Team Ninja.

How about Metroid 5? You know, an actual sequel to Metroid Fusion? I'm done floating around with this midquel shit with all the latest games taking place before 3 or after 3 but before 4. You know you're just needlessly bloating your series's timeline right?

And just to deflate your fanboy dreams, if Sakamoto is writing any of these games' scripts, it'll be just as bad as Other M's because Sakamoto no longer gives a shit. He's hit the same plateau that Jeph Loeb did in the 90s post Batman: Hush where he realized he could shit on a paper and call it a story and people would lap it up as long as Jim Lee did art for the books.

There's a timeline?
I just played Metroid and thought of them as different missions for Samus in a none-timeliney-universe :p
Metroid Prime was awesome!
Similar game on the WiiU would be great!

We have Hyrule warriors, SmashBros and Splatoon coming, so loads of possibility for co-op with fellow Escapists :)

I'm just hoping Sakamoto stays far away this time. In fact, I think Retro should just take Metroid, like Intelligent Systems does for Fire Emblem and Game Freak does for Pokémon. I want to be excited about this, I really do, but there's just too little to go on here.

Yeah, there is a correct order for the games, storywise. It is mostly inconsequential, but it is there.
That said, none of the plot points from any of the games are really necessary to understand any of the others, except maybe Prime 3, which ties more into the story of the previous two Primes.

Also, Officially, Other M has retconned the Prime series, but as far as I'm concerned Yoshio Sakamoto can blow me because his precious Other M sucks and doesn't even reach the heels of the Prime Trilogy.

Really? Granted that I never finished Other M, but what did it do to contradict anything in the Prime series?

If that's true, the chances of me buying a WiiU are rising and rising. The WiiU is getting a damn interesting catalogue.

Ok, I shouldn't have said officially. It is more conjecture based on the fact that Other M does not acknowledge the Prime games in any way.

For example, in Other M she states: "This is the first joint operation I've been a part of since I became a freelance bounty hunter. It's also the first time I've taken orders from a commanding officer since leaving the Federation army." Except that totally happened in Prime 3: Corruption. Yoshio Sakamoto has also been consistently vague in interviews about where the Prime games fit, with saying they are "different" coming closest.

It's things like that that make it seem like Prime either didn't happen at all, it happened in an alternate timeline/universe, or Sakamoto is just a bad/lazy writer and couldn't be arsed to make things consistent.

Option number 3 is probably the real one, but I prefer the idea that Sakamoto jibbed the Prime series because it did a better job than he did.

Hopefully these will both be on 3DS as I do not own, and have no desire to own a WiiU.
It's been way too long since we had a new Metroid.
The last one was the rather spectacular Prime 3: Corruption back in '07.

We almost had another one made by Team Ninja, but the project was cancelled.
It's a shame, their questionable gender politics aside, I'm sure they could make a good Metroid game if kept on a short leash.
(Yes, I'm still bitter)

Captcha: DO IT NOW!
I agree Captcha, we need more Metroid now.

Like a lot of Nintendo games, the timeline isn't made very clear. However, through official comments by Nintendo and subtle hints and references throughout the series, people have been able to mostly piece together the timeline. However, outside of the obvious, such as the Prime games, there is absolutely no need to follow them in order to appreciate each individual game's story, and even then I don't think anyone coming in late to the Prime trilogy will miss out on too much by not playing the older games.

With that said, please excuse me as I go and celebrate this fantastic news and buy a special calendar for when I can finally start counting down the days until the next Metroid game (and likely buy a WiiU to go along with it). OK, maybe I won't go so far as to buy a special calendar, but this is still some of the best video game related news of this year. The only thing that would be better is if Nintendo fully confirmed these games and started giving us solid details.

Samus saying "It's the first joint mission I've had with the Galactic Federation since becoming a bounty hunter." Plus there have been some really badly translated interviews with Sakamoto contemplating the place in the timeline. At worst it's just a hiccup. It happens all the time to people. Heck, the Zelda timeline was freaking anarchy until recently.

Anyway, on topic, I'm gonna be blunt: this is OLD news and not really news anyway. It's just Takahashi and Shiggy casting ideas out there. It's them contemplating the series. Plus neither of them are in charge of that franchise, that's Sakamoto's baby, the only way they'd know anything is if Sakamoto permitted them. Plus, Prime? Really? Why would they want to go back to that? That sub-series was running out of ideas swiftly and it took the Wii to squeeze out another entry. If barely. If they wanna go back to Metroid either do Other M's style (which has FAR more potential) or do something new.

Looking forward tot he 2D one. Was never that big a fan of the Prime series though. Honestly felt kind of boring in comparison to the other games, but eh.

If they made a new Metroid or two, I'd be able to dust off my 3DS (and wear out its battery) and/or be pushed over the edge into buy "Wii U now" territory. I'd pay extra for a special edition Metroid Wii U.

Although, didn't that Kotaku interview already make a story here on the Escapist, or did I read that somewhere else?

Rules Big N should follow, though:
1 Don't let Sakamoto go all George Lucas on the series again and turn Metroid into Nintendo's Star Wars Prequel Trilogy. Keep him on a leash with a choker chain if he is to take any part with character design or story boarding.

2 Make a 2D handheld entry, that is open like Super/ Zero Mission. Fusion refined the controls and minor elements(bomb blocks, screw attack blocks), but was too hold-your-hand-with-a-death-grip until the run before the final boss. Zero Mission brought Super's open-endedness of the Metroidvania genre to Fusion's refinements, while perfecting the balance between hand holding and freedom. Sequence breaking adds so much to a 2-4 hour game.

3 Whether 3D or 2D, make the first sequel in 12 years. Fusion's last few events shed some major plots details that would make Metroid 5 very interesting story-wise (as long as Sakamoto isn't allowed to make the characters dull moving wax statues again).

4 Don't release updates that disable glitch exploiting sequence breaking if it does crash or break the game. Prime 1's original NA version was pretty awesome with its glitchy sequence breaks that almost made it as open as Super. Nothing was wrong with it since you had to be looking for ways to do these, but Retro had to put obstacles in place and disable the scan dash to ruin the fun for everyone that got a different version.

If they make some new Metroid games, I'll have to play through a lot of them again to get ready for new ones. Loved the Prime series (got the trilogy for Wii with the awesome case) as well as the 2D ones (Super, fusion, zero mission). If they did one of each I would be happy.

The question is if they are making new games, when would they announce it? With Smash Brothers taking the center stage for Nintendo at the moment, you don't want to do it before it's released, but after that is when we will be getting more information about the new Zelda, or I assume we will. Maybe it would be part of next E3? All I know is there are lots of games I'm interested in at the moment in the coming year.

The biggest worry I have for a new Metroid...well, the consequences of Other M.

On one hand, trying to flesh out Samus's character was a good idea.
On the other, making her a co-dependent idiot was just...unspeakably bad.

If I were Sakamoto, I'd probably be rather sore about the whole issue, and wary of attempting anything new again.
That in turn makes me wary of a new Metroid. Will it be a train wreck? A return to form? Or just a hyper conservative remake?
