I am that rare hybrid of musical tastes that allows me to listen to just about anything and enjoy it, thanks mostly to my father's eclectic musical tastes...if it wasn't for him, I'd probably be one of those mulleted idiots who thinks Motley Crue is still good music.

Anyway, one of the things I am a fan of is old school hip-hop, Run-DMC, Jurassic 5, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Beastie Boys, KRS-One and the like...hell, I remember watching Crush Groove on borrowed VCR and thinking it was the coolest thing ever, but I digress.

It seems to me that thoughtful, intelligent rappers are getting fewer and farther between, and I lament the days when being able to put together a thoughtful rhyme was what got you famous, I mean, yes there's still guys like Slug from Atmosphere who make me think, but for every Slug, there's three more idiots out there like Soulja boy, Ne-Yo and the goddamn Ying-Yang Twins stinking things up, and even the few shining examples that were cropping up have all seem to have disappeared, Tupac, Biggie...Kanye used to be good until he developed that god complex, and even Common seems to be giving up.

Point is my old mainstays are literally getting old, and won't be able to keep this up forever, so I'm wondering how many of you out there know your hip-hop history well enough to point me in the direction of some young blood carrying the old torches.

1. Hilarious mis-post.

2. I actually find most Hip-hop repugnant because of the lack of easy to find rappers that talk about more than the most shallow of shit. I WANT TO THINK DAMNIT.

I can name many thoughtful and intelligent rappers, but not young bloods carrying the old torches.

Great list, though I have most of it already, I will definitely check out the stuff I don't...and based on this list, may I also recommend to you Jedi Mind Tricks , Danger Mouse and Eyedea & Ability, though that latter might be hard to find.

Also I think that there is a huge amount of great rappers but they are not mainstream, and perhaps it should stay this way, lest they be tainted by the shit that is swirling around like Soulja Boy (you know that bastard had the gall to say he was better than ice T??) and 50 Cent, but it pains me that when people think hip hop they think of those two and those similar to those two.

Oh yeah I left out the link for Canibus - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E2dQHwP7kAY

And here is one for Black Thought, rap fans should know of him and the Roots, but I'll post it anyway! - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cZJYMCegSw

Screw it, Dialated Peoples too - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lt2uaAyw1gs

I have a strong inkling he won't, and not to tack him in with the masses here but most don't bother to, they are content just bashing the genre and claiming that their view is law and nothing could change it.

Quasimoto? Shurik'n? (french)

Okay I'll stop now :p

What about...A rapper that sang about Orwell.
Or other masters of deep thinking.
Think about it, they could be rap ballads! Like, one about Animal Farm, and 1984...
Would be EPIC

Goodness...Asheru is only one I've heard of...that's...well, unheard of. Eyedea & Ability (Emcee and DJ, respectively) might be hard to find as I said, they're from Minnesota, but hey, if I can find Atmosphere way the hell out in PA, there might hope for them, too.

Or hip-hop.
Whatever.
Check out Matisyahu, he's a Hacedic (sp?) Jew who does dancehall reggae about God. Shit's crazy.

Well I imagine that there could be nerdcore rappers who would rap about such things, I mean they have rapped about games, science, science fiction, among other things, in fact I may take a look and see if there are any (you best believe I've never been more serious in my life).

I couldn't suggest anything you haven't already heard of, but I recently discovered MC Frontalot, and nerdcore hip-hop.

You should check it out, I really like it.
