I am that rare hybrid of musical tastes that allows me to listen to just about anything and enjoy it, thanks mostly to my father's eclectic musical tastes...if it wasn't for him, I'd probably be one of those mulleted idiots who thinks Motley Crue is still good music.
Anyway, one of the things I am a fan of is old school hip-hop, Run-DMC, Jurassic 5, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Beastie Boys, KRS-One and the like...hell, I remember watching Crush Groove on borrowed VCR and thinking it was the coolest thing ever, but I digress.
It seems to me that thoughtful, intelligent rappers are getting fewer and farther between, and I lament the days when being able to put together a thoughtful rhyme was what got you famous, I mean, yes there's still guys like Slug from Atmosphere who make me think, but for every Slug, there's three more idiots out there like Soulja boy, Ne-Yo and the goddamn Ying-Yang Twins stinking things up, and even the few shining examples that were cropping up have all seem to have disappeared, Tupac, Biggie...Kanye used to be good until he developed that god complex, and even Common seems to be giving up.
Point is my old mainstays are literally getting old, and won't be able to keep this up forever, so I'm wondering how many of you out there know your hip-hop history well enough to point me in the direction of some young blood carrying the old torches.
