How many hipsters does it take to change a light bulb?

OT: I think hipsters are a rather annoying trend. Yes, I said trend. See, hipsters can't actually exist. They are devoutly against the mainstream, yet they have become mainstream, and even have a hipster dress code of sorts. Therefore, they have become an unstable mass and will someday in the very near future collapse into a collective, yet very obscure black hole.

I don't give much of a fuck, I'm not one myself and I don't know any. I see them a lot at Uni or at gigs/clubs but meh; I don't particularly find hipsters interesting, just annoying and incredibly corny. Does that mean I think every person I believe to be a hipster is the same in both appearance and personality? Yes, completely. It's cool though, every time I walk past one of those messes I get to compare the many ways in which I'm a better human being.

I was judging people before it was cool.

My sister and her boyfriend appear, in my eyes, to be hipsters in at least the part about how they dress. However, they're still pretty mainstream and the day anyone in my family buys a fucking mac, I'll eat my hat.

What's your opinion on hipsters? Do you see them a lot? Do you have hipster friends? Or are you a hipster yourself? Well, you can't really say that because then you wouldn't be a hipster because you admitted to being a hipster.
Time to remove the word from our collective lexicon. I like what I like for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is how it makes others view me. If I intentionally wear mismatched socks, it is because it amuses me and for no other reason. I do it while wearing long pants and no one knows it but me. A hipster can be someone like me, or it can be someone who's every affectation, every word, every choice screams for others to look at them. The two couldn't be farther apart. So let's ditch the word.

If a 'hipster' is someone who hates popular things then thats cool. I'm one I suppose because haters gotta hate and there are alot of things that this hater be hatin'. The term 'hipster' though seems pretty stupid to me, the only time I've ever heard it was on a TV show that honestly wasn't even that good.

Main reason i'm commenting is because I saw Teddy Roosevelt was the last one to comment and I giggled like a Japanese school girl.

I really don't like the hipsters I've met, they've all bee douches. The closest I come to one is wearing a trilbee or fedora on occassion, sunglasses and being a cinema snob.

What I don't understand is a choice in style that makes you a target. wearing clothes that hinder your movement make you more likely to be the victim of crime. hipsters choice in apparel make them come of as feminine, which by reputation people will assume to be less likely defend themselves. now I'm sure there are some tuff hipsters out there, but if you walk around looking like easy prey you will still be seen as a target, and no one wants a gun drawn on them.

Nothing wrong with these two things.

Well, personally I see something I like in most subcultures. And labels of them get thrown around ridiculously easy. I don't know if I agree with disliking something just because it is popular. But various "Post-Rock" bands aren't bad. I'm also appreciative that they seem to have helped made retro-gaming make a comeback to the point you can buy Mario shirts at mainstream stored. They didn't even do that when I was a kid.

I don't know how accurate it is, but it seems like I like a lot of things from the modern usage of the word. I can also relate to the idea of finding a niche thing that appeals to you. It has it's ups and downs, though. It stinks not having anybody who likes what you like.

Bahahahaaha! So you're saying that hipsters are easier targets for muggings and such? That's hilarious. I'm not hating on you at all, I just found that really funny.

Im so hipster I like hipsters just because everyone else hates them. Hell yeah.

Serious though, they are mildly annoying, although I have to admit that I havent really met many in real life. The trend seems to be rather minor in Germany (and thank God for that).
An ex-girlfriend of mine married a air-force pilot who is stationed up in germany right now, and she is about as hipster as they come. So sorry a little american vegan hipster has infiltrated germany. i imagine American hipsters aren't a big problem in Europe, after all, flying is soooo mainstream. lol

I know a shitton of them, I live just across the Columbia River from Portland Oregon, so its pretty common to see them. This has of course lead to me having a rather irrational hatred of hipsters mostly because their constant quests to appear to be apathetic and super trendy while at the same time not "mainstream" annoys the living shit out of me.

this is how famous Portland is for hipsters.

God, that's the thing I hate most about the whole hate on "hipsters" or "emos" or whatever.

It's fine if you don't like whining or suicidal behavior or elitism. But rallying against androgyny of all varieties annoys me. If dressing feminine makes you a target, you are not living in a good area. And if some people are still so backward as to mistreat people based upon dressing feminine, it means all the more reason people should have the guts to do it and move social trends in a different direction.

Gender roles are stupid. Feminine men are awesome. I sure as heck don't want to date some macho guy.

Can we get a definition of hipster? Is it the attitude that makes you one, or the music/clothing/etc?

I have friends though that meet every hipster stereotype, the clothing/music/cigs/movies/vinyl/handlebar mustache expect they don't have the attitude. They are quite nice, but everything else says hipster.

Everyone says the worst thing about hipsters is there condescending attitude, which is true but you know what I find everyone has that attitude at times, most frequently from people who think they are capable of judging people by there clothes and music tastes.

I feel this song sums it up perfectly, I have friends that like some things that many would call hipster (indie music and skinny jeans) but by no means consider themselves hipsters.

Simply stated being a hipster is that superiority complex where you think liking the thing you do makes you better than the "normal people" who follow the herd. It's perfectly fine to try and buy green and stay on top of indie trends but when you start thinking you're better than the rest of the world you're a hipster, a punk, and hopelessly self-absorbed.
