Necrothread and triple posting, nice job man. Seriously though, I think there are rules about necro threads, you should probably check the post dates next time.

Farengar sent those after me. While I managed to beat them, seeing those brawny, heavily-armed people advancing towards me before announcing "We're going to teach you a lesson" was a memorable "OH CRAP" moment.

Hire a thug of your own to teach them a lesson! 500 gold is a small price to pay (steal) if you can't hand;e them on your own. Or lead them over to a group of bandits and have them do the dirty work, for free. A frenzy spell is my personal favorite method.

I've only had to deal with them once on any given playthrough, didn't know they keep returning, that's kinda neat.

I was wearing imperial light armor from the tutorial and a shitty iron sword. I wanted better gear, so I went on a stealing rampage when I first started the game to get these guys after me. It worked. Three guys, steel armor on all of them, orcish weapons. I died about five times, but it was worth it. I didn't have to find any new gear until I in my 20s in terms of level.

Had this problem outside of Whiterun in my game, I found out that if you sidestep their swings (pretty easy to do if you get the bloke with hte two-hander) and they hit a guard, the guards will aggro on them and kill them for you, was a useful and accidental trick I found out after running like a quivering wuss didn't get me very far >.>

I stole some shit from the Blacksmith's. They came after me in Whiterun later, but were nothing that I and my steel-outfitted Sven couldn't handle. They only ever bother you once about the thievery. Only other time it happened was a little while after a huge thieving binge in Riften.

I got attacked by them, just after I killed the first dragon, with my character who was the Thieves Guild Master and Harbinger, with a level 40 companion Erik the Slayer and all the guardsmen and Irileth standing around praising me. They got torn to pieces.

All I personally did, At level two was at Riverwood use the fire spell and kill one at a time while the others are walking ( Slowly ) towards you. While your burning them one by one you can keep running into the river so they can't harm you. After your magicka is restored, get out of the river and keep burning. You can also go into the river incase your health is low Hope this helped! :)

I love when i'm minding my own and someone jumps out and tries to "teach me a lesson" or "rob me." I got a full set of ebony armor from a female breton this way. Not to mention the deadric bow and arrows she was carrying.

They don't stop coming, but they're very much killable. Tough, yes, but they're as vulnerable as anybody else. That said, I stopped stealing on my current character when a hired gang came after me, because I like to be looked at as a hero in these kinds of games, or at least on character, I do. I killed the first gang that came after me, and I haven't had one on that character since, so I guess, kill them, and if you don't want to deal with them in future, don't steal.

Don't be a thief if you can't deal with the consequences.

You do know the law of saving your game in a Bethesda product, eh?
it's been a while since i'd played one of their games, and i'd forgotten. Worst of all, i don't even know what i stole. I left the shop, went back in an hour later, and got attacked. Seriously considering throwing the game out the fucking window. I hate it when i'm forced to start over in a game for something that was a complete accident.
Yeah man.... throw the fucking game out a window! Fuck that shit bro. Who are they to dare highlight things in red and tell you you are stealing shit. It's like so like wrong ya know? Why are we like being punished for like doing things that are wrong? Like who are they to judge us when like we are the ones who the world revolves around?!

Super cerial like, lets just cut out the repercussions of our actions. That's like so how the world should be, like ya know? Being forced to like do the wrong thing is totally not your fault. You should sue their asses for being such uptight like, ya know?

It's like soo uncool man. Who can keep track of what they do anyways?! It's so super unreasonable, like, ya know, like man?

/sarcasm (I just watched my local hockey team lose, don't think I'm being angsty at you for any other reason)

It's always best to save early and often when playing games that give you that option. Like, ya know what I'm sayin?
Hey! you can do that :)

Open console, type tai (toggle ai) everybody except *you* in the world becomes a vegetable weeee

And yes, i know it was sarcasm ;)

I am a level 12 and I just ran into this problem. I'm almost positive these thugs showed up because I stole items from Pinewatch (a bandit hideout), because after the first time they attacked the next morning when I was trying to sell the items in Falkreath (and beat my ass down badly), I fast traveled to another city to sell the items that I stole from the bandits, and after I did, I was not attacked in Falkreath the next day when I returned. However, when I returned to Pinewatch to steal the remainder of the items I had left there, the thugs were waiting for me when I walked out of the door of the cabin. This time I was more prepared. I had already gone back to a previous destination to retrieve my patiently awaiting housecarl , Lydia (who happens to be a bad *****), and I also thought to summon a flame atronoch. Having those two to help made the fight much more fair, and I also took the advice of some of you here and ran away and used some long-range attacks (fire-bolt) then finished of the one remaining with a sword. I would not say they are easy to kill but it's definitely possible. It might teach a low-level player a lesson about thieving from thieves.
