Anyone know any good ones? The only truly enjoyable ones I've played were the Impressions Games city building games, the Age of Empires series, and maybe the Total War games if those really count. Oh, also, 1503 A.D.

If you want a really detailed, in depth World War II game then Hearts of Iron 2 is fantastic. It takes some time to get the hang of it but once you do you can have hundreds of hours of fun on it.

Also, Master of Olympus Zeus is really fun too, and if you liked Age of Empires, you could try Age of Mythology.

Europa Universalis III. Historical Grand Strategy on huge scale. Recommended if you like historical games. :)

The Original Call of Duty was pretty accurate as well as Brothers in Arms as far as encounters and locations go.

Wow, can't believe noone's mentioned the Civilization series. It may not teach you dates, but if you actually read the ingame civilopedia articles, it's highly educational on historical matters. As a student going to college to be a History teacher, I would love to have a computer set up in the classroom where the kids could play Civ on the (hopefully) rare occasion that they get done early with their classwork.

Paradox Interactive's entire body of work, especially the stuff in 2D. Crusader Kings, Europa Universalis 2 or 3, Victoria 1 or 2, and Hearts of Iron 2 (but not 3, HoI3 was a mess.)

Patrician 4 and Port Royale 2 are excellent as well. If you liked the Anno games (1503 AD and its many sequels), you'll appreciate the Patrician and PR games.
