Hullo Escapists. So I just installed TF2 from Steam today, but after several tries, I keep getting an error that tells me hl2.exe stops working. I've already tried these solutions:

- Uninstall and re-install TF2
- -dxlevel8 on launch options
- Deleting hl2.exe and bin folder
- -windowed in launch options

I am running Windows 7 from a Dell Inspiron N7110 with McAfee as my firewall.

If anyone could help me troubleshoot a bit, that would be wonderful.

Try verifying the game cache. Right click on the game and go to properties. It should be there. Sometimes in the installation, things go wrong, so it runs a scan to see if anything is missing and then downloads it.

And I'd never ever recommend dxlevel8. The game does not need extreme hardware. It will look fantastic on just about any system made in the last three years. You don't need to make it look ugly.

It says everything is fine. What else can I do? If it is anything of reference, I can run Portal just fine.

Hmm. Well, for starters, you're using a laptop with an integrated graphics card, which is always a bit of a problem when running games. You can run Portal, which is good. I've had similar problems with TF2, where I would crash after every map change. I would suggest contacting steam support, or using google to see if people with the same laptop have had similar problems.

I did do a google search, and it does appear that other people are having this error, specifically after Valve released an update. I bet that might have something to do with it... Also, my brother HAS been able to run it from his older laptop. Thus the cause of my confusion, as you can probably guess..

I've had that same error before, though I forgot how I fixed it. Maybe uninstalling/reinstalling Steam? It's actually a pretty common issue. You should check out the Steam forums for the most comprehensive and up-to-date fixes.

I recall reading somewhere it was due to some codec for either video or audio.

If that's the case, it's almost invariably FFDshow.

Sadly though "hl2.exe has stopped working" is not really an error that is helpful.

It's like saying "it's broken."

It could be your anti-virus. It could be your drivers. it could be just about anything.

However since it was not mentioned I'd suggest doing these things:

Make sure your drivers are up to date.
Restart your computer.
Run the game in compatibility mode, disable visual themes, desktop comp and run the game as an admin.

If any of that helps..yaay, if not..really just talk to steam support. They'd be able to get more info out of you than we could. >> and they're understand all the info you give them.

I've had this error before... I think it comes down to instability via compatibility issues... I think anyway... when I switched out mah graphics card it worked fine...
