We've all had those times when we just sit down with family or friends and want to play simple and fun games. Me and those around me usually resort to two games. Those being Crash Team Racing and Hogs of War, two gems from the original Playstation. Two gems that will be shoveled in to my beloved memory pile once they no longer work. The one game we spent most on however is the one with the shooting bacon.

Aaaaaah Bacon. Glorious master of the universe, what can you NOT do? Bacon can dance in Footloose, Bacon can be eaten, it can be used as fuel, it can cure deceases and you can use it to make a Kalashnikov. And now, bacon can wage war!
But what makes this game so much fun? Let's dig deeper to find out.

It was the year 2000 when Infogrames Studios released Hogs of War for the PC and the PS1. You might know Infogrames from such games as Alone in the Dark and Unreal Tournament. The game was a turn based strategy title in which you take control of your own army of humanoid pigs of the First world war era. It's also a game that is extremely hilarious due to the excellent voice work the British comedian: Rik Mayall. For example, when you finish a round with the team known as: Uncle Ham's Hogs, he'd say:
"Navy Blue,
Rhymes with Poo
Scrape it off a bot,
and wipe it on you!"
The game is just filled with hilarious nonsense like that which will have you bursting in laughter when you least expect it.

It's not just the script in which the humor is amazing. There's also the gameplay and everything it encompasses.
There's both a single player campaign and a multiplayer campaign. In both of which you play as a team. The goal is to completely eliminate the other team. If in the multiplayer you lose your team, it's game over for you. Whenever you lose a hog in the single player, that hog is dead and will never come back. Any upgrade you may have to it is gone and you're given a whole new, rookie hog.

The gameplay itself then. After you've selected a team, you're parachuted in to the map. Maps can range from challenging to kiddy like. In it you have many minefields, lakes, trees and bunkers that can be used for you or against you. Whenever it is your turn, you have a fixed amounts of seconds to move your character around and make a move. Most of the times, once you used a weapon, you stop the round. Though some items like the mine and the jetpack, Yes world war 1 had jetpacks, don't follow this rule.
The moves you can make depend on what class of hog you are controlling at that moment. The paratroopers have the jetpacks, the medics can cure and so you have a grenadier class, sniper class and Spartan Class. That last one is a lie but it would have been totally frigging awesome to see a Master Bacon ... even if Halo hadn't been released yet.

So, the hogs are cute, they just rub off the dust when they get blown up by a rocket and the humor in this game is superb.

3B's: ((Buy it, Borrow it or Blow it))

I'd say Buy it, if you ever find it. It's a game, it's loads of fun when playing it with friends and you'll not regret it buying it at all.

I was obsessed with this game for a while until I could do the entire thing without ever losing any of my pigs and collecting every medal.

A touch of nostalgia in my EscapistMagazine forums :) I remember this game from yeeeeaaaars ago.
Reminds me how the simple games are often the best, and how the gaming industry was much more entertaining before it was commercialised.

Yup, loved this.

The end level was nigh impossible, however. But, to be fair, I was 9 or 10 at the time.... If I ever find a copy of it, I'm getting it again.

Plus, I believe that a new one is coming out, isn't it...?

There was a game in the works but it got canceled. They're planning on reviving it, but no word yet from the developers.
