The two word subject title is pretty effective. I am thinking of going on holiday this summer, but on my own. It doesn't seem to be too popular as a concept. You have family holidays, honeymoons, group holidays, romantic breaks, whatever else. You don't tend to hear much about people going on holidays abroad on their own.

So what do you think? You ever been on a holiday on your own? You think its a good idea?

I see no issue with it, (apart from maybe safety, depending on where you go), and would personally prefer it to a family holiday.

It'd be alright I guess, but nothing on the scale of fun compared to a holiday with friends, they're just amazing. Marter's right about safety issues though, just be careful where you go.

Depends on what you consider a good holiday.

My idea of a great holiday is staying in a small Italian fishing town for a couple of weeks. Good food, good weather, nice locals. If there is a good cappucino cafe, I'm set. I'd be happy there with my fiancee or on my own. I enjoy my own company, so as long as I have plenty of books to read, I'm set.

I've been on holiday alone around a dozen times. It's a lot of fun, and friends are easily made - unless you end up somewhere remote, or the language barrier poses a great issue, you're bound to meet fellow solo travellers, or friendly locals or even holidaying groups who'll take you in.

Safety is all common sense, if you manage it at home you'll manage it abroad. Just make sure you keep all your details on you at all times, especially any travel insurance information.

They're more popular than you think.
If you wanna do it, have a proper look up of it.

I couldn't do it personaly, I think I'd get fed up of my own company and I like to share things like holidays with someone/poeple.

It's been a while since I went on holiday anywhere. I don't see anything wrong going by yourself.

I'm going to the UK from Canada to see my girlfriend and some relatives. Pretty nervous, to be honest, but I think it will be a good experience.
I know a few people who've travelled solo and they've all been fine.

I think it depends more on the type of holiday someone is after. Like, if you just want to go and relax and do nothing else, then I would take a solo holiday for that. People tend to have a way about screwing up my attempts to simply relax by telling me they want to go out and do things. But if you want to go on a holiday for the enjoyment factor then most people will find a travel companion to be mandatory. It allows you to have someone to BS with and share the experience so you can refer to it in the future for laughs and such.

Personally though I would never head abroad to go on a solo vacation. I can attain basically what I'm looking for by just heading into the country side to get away from everything. If I'm going out of the country/continent I'm going for the experience and bringing someone with me.
