Let's look at recent video game adaptations NOT by Uwe Boll.

Hitman-Mediocre
Max Payne-Could have been awesome... mediocre
Prince of Persia-Who cast Jake Gyllenhaal as an Arabian prince?

Hollywood, you fuck these things up all the time when you are given free reign.

Film will not be made by using all the old, hackneyed Hollywood conventions = Good film.
Film will be made about a computer game franchise = Bad film.

So surely Good film + Bad film = Average film.

Lets see. Movies based on video games almost universally suck. No video game has ever benefited from being associated with a sucky movie. Ubisoft has entered into an agreement that virtually guarantees that no movie will ever be made based on Assassin's Creed.

I think Ubisoft has found a winning combination here.

Yes because God forbid we have the company that actually knows what the hell it's talking about with the Assassin's Creed series take control and make a decent movie out of it.
Remember your ideas for the Uncharted movie, Hollywood? You know, the ones that everybody hated?

Hell, remember this?

You can't even make a movie about Mario so why should we let you loose with Assassin's Creed?

Go Ubisoft! ROW, ROW FIGHT DA POWAH!

The reason this movie will fail is because Hollywood will sabotage it to protect their empire. Why would they willingly show that they aren't the smartest game in town?

I wouldn't say that Ubisoft is a dumb company. They know that developing film is extrememly different from developing a video game and I'm sure they'll be hiring all sorts of professional staff, counsultants and movie experts for this project. All they want is the ultimate power to say "yes" or "no" to key decisions and what's so bad about that? The flip side for them of course is that if this thing does fail they'll only have themselves to blame and they'll never find another publisher to do this for them.

I thought we were agreed that writing and story in assassins creed is terrible. It shouldn't be made.

these "hollywood spectators" say that if they undervalue what movies studios do it is GAURANTEED to be a bad movie, and i have two things to say about that, one thats bullshit. and 2 i think they might be underestimating what game studios do, ill bet a clip of assassins creed lineage would shut their traps pretty quick

Undervalue what movie studios do?! LOL!!
Omg wow.. with the kind of cr*p that Movie Studios have been releasing lately, they're concerned about undervaluing a movie studio??

I find it incredible that anyone can have such a high opinion of Movie Studios these days and frankly see Ubisoft actually making something worth watching, they've already mad an amazing story and directed that well, I'm not about to doubt them just because they aren't a Movie Studio.

I didn't know they were making an Assassin's Creed movie. But we know the simple mistake of a movie based on a game: How can you fit the plot of a game in a two or three hour film? Even when its a game with little story like Super Mario Bros, Hollywood still mess it up. Whats the chances of this movie being finished after Assassin's Creed III?

Still I might watch that Assassin's Creed II prequel movie, short films are ok with me just to make me a complete hypocrite about the second sentence I made. :D

By the way I guess we can just assume that the trailer for that live action Pokemon film was just a fake?

I hope so.

They'll cast a middle eastern actor as Altiar. Film does ok in Europe and America, explodes in the middle east. makes millions due to undervalued market. Sets an amazing precedent in hollywood that frees films from any kind of outdated controls on creativity.

I can dream...

Is Uwe Boll directing? No? Michael Bay? No? So there might be hope...It's not that I'm happy with UBISoft but I think the should try their thing.

I think we all know the reason why Ubisoft insist on having so much influence over the movie.

It's because they want to be sure that the theatre has to connect to the internet before anyone can watch the movie, and stay connected the entire time.

On the one hand, converting stories between mediums is a pretty hard task and not knowing anything about the destination medium can't be too helpful.

On the other hand it's not like Hollywood is any good at converting video games to movies either.

What does Ubisoft actually know about making movies outside of the virtual realm?

Well considering that 30 minute episode they made as a promo for Assassin's Creed II was developed by Ubisoft and was actually very well handled and executed, I'd say quite a lot.

Sounds more like it's Hollywood getting butt-hurt.

Hollywood's done so well in the past with video game adaptations when they had more control. Totally. Yeah. Uh-hu.

I can see an Assassin's Creed movie actually appealing to non-gamers a lot more than other video game titles.

To be fair I very much doubt much would be done in-house. Ubi would just hire industry insiders. Ubi is just the company that will provide a bulk of the funding and have the final say over the end product.
