Seriously, I can't believe I didn't notice a huge-ass thunderstorm happening outside my window until just now. Has anyone else here failed to take note of their surroundings like this, or am I just dumb?

Well if your windows are built in a good fashion then it should be rather quiet inside and thus you could easily miss the thunderstorm. There's that and a fair number of other reasons(Very focused on what you're doing, or are distracted by it. Either one) that might keep you from realising what goes on in that MMRLG we call The Outside.
Personally I hate it when that happens to me(And it does!) because I like rain and I hate noticing it when only the last little drizzles are falling from my trees after the rain's already stopped.
