As any of you (none of you) who have read and remembered my posts may know, I like to talk about how much I hate oblivion. I never managed to get into it for a number of reasons and have had great difficulty getting into it. Today, having no other games to play, I decided to give oblivion another go, seeing as I haven't played it in a long time, and I loved it. I couldn't stop playing. I think that the reason I stopped playing is because I ran out of interesting level-appropriate quests to do and got really bored, but having found a bunch of new quests, I actually have something to do now. There are still certain aspects of the game that are incredibly frustrating, but I suddenly have the ability to overlook them.

My question is this. Have you ever had an experience in which you disliked or had difficulty understanding something because you were in the wrong mindset or were put off by minor flaws, but then returned to it and realized that you were wrong to abandon it so hastily?

PS. Before you ***** at me, this shouldn't be in gaming discussion because it isn't necessarily about games, although it could be.

PPS. Consider this my gonzo thread. I know it's a bit late, but whatever.

Yes. Far Cry 2. I feel that it was a game with many flaws (Kevlar tank tops for one) but I felt like playing it for a week.

I then remember why I stopped playing it.

Oblivion is the worst game I've ever loved.

For me, it'd probably be screamo before Brand New's Daisy. I still despise the majority of it, but I was wrong to think it was entirely without merit.
Or alcohol before sake, come to think of it. Same situation.

Metroid Prime (original).

I must have just played it on an off-day the first time, because when I picked it up again three years later, I was hooked.

I used to strongly dislike Cannibal Corpse, Behemoth and other similar bands but now I love it. And when I was only into Cannibal Corpse, Behemoth and other similar bands I used to dislike Power Metal but now I listen to a lot of that as well. I have struck a good balance and listen to a wide variety of metal now.

Game-wise: After playing Prototype I didn't like inFamous for a while but have had the urge to play inFamous a lot lately so I borrowed it off my friend and am loving it.

Hated Fallout 3 when I first tried it. Turned out that was because my build was bullshit and I was taking on stuff way too hard for me without doing the learner type quests that Batshit Moira gives.

Hated beer the first time I tried it. Now I love the stuff.

Tastes change :)

Fire Emblem 7 (first to come out in English I think) and Advanced Wars, both on the GameBoy. absolutly marvelous once I played past the first stage. I had more action based games to play as I got them in a bundle of sorts

Halo. No, sorry. Specifically, Halo 3 was a turnaround in what I thought was a head start downhill. I'm glad it ended on a high note.

IRL, I'm pretty accepting with a lot of what is going on, so I don't really have experiences like that so often.

Boarderlands was my hate-it-love-it game.

When I first played it at a friends (co-op 360 play), I wanted to shut up all voice acting. Each character has all of 3 lines, it seemed like, and they'd always say the same thing. Then there was Claptrap... and his dancing. Forced humor like his doesn't settle with me. Then there's the voice acting! The only thing worse than twang is forced fake twang. It's just all kinds of bad. None of the voice acting was the least bit appealing! (Then there was the bad split screen menus on the 360... if you've seen, you know what I mean.)

Having said that, the gameplay and random aspect of the guns keep me interested. Just as long as no one opens their mouth (to much to ask), I enjoy my time with the game.

Dragon Age Origins initially I created a Human Noble Warrior, made him look stupid with a huge neck, my guy was identical to Alistair in skills which meant if I used both of them I'd be needlessly doubling up (I like Alistair). Didn't know about making potions and got stuck in Redcliffe constantly dieing. Played for a couple of hours before quitting for two weeks.

Started again, crafted a face I could respect, made a mage, became an arcane warrior and have a really good party balance of character I both like and find useful. Been playing it into the wee hours of the morning since.

Seriously why do they even let you choose anything other than mage? (kidding)

'His Dark Materials' trilogy. I got bored after the first chapter, put it down and then didn't pick it up for three more years. When I did, I had trouble sleeping due to wanting to read the next chapter.

Oh, man... As much as I hate to say this (especially considering how much I praise this game on this site to the point that I'm tempted to just quite coming here and just play it more): Shadow of the Colossus.

I first played this over at a now dead shop where you could play hundreds of games on widescreen TVs for an hour per play (think of it as a console and pc arcade with freeplay on). At the time, I was overwelmed, and the game didn't grab me because I skipped the opening and proceeded to the first boss not knowing much about what to do. When I got to fighting him, my arrows weren't doing enough damage to his head (where the weak spot was according to my sword) and I wasn't going to get stuck playing one game when I had so many to choose from. I judged the game to be boring, broken, completely unimmersive, bland, and overall lacking the jawdropping action I heard about and went on to play something else.
Later, I saw the game being proudly displayed on a rack at a discounted price. I remembered that first boss and picked up the game, my pride refusing to allow me to be beaten by the intro boss that I wasn't supposed to lose to.
I watched the opening unfold and suddenly found myself wrapped up in the world. When I made it to that boss again, I notice the light from my sword also pointed at his leg. Everything fell together after that. Suddenly the game was epic, the story amazing, and the world so immersive, I found myself having to actually work up a small measure of courage to walk into the water to face the electric eel.

Nongame related is music. I literaly despised most of it until a few years ago. Now I need my headphones on all the time.
