Damnit YouTube, stop asking me to give you my name. I've already said no, several times. I've given you the reasons why I don't want to use my name and still you persist, giving me an inescapable popup that won't go away until I say, yet again, that I DON'T want to use my actual name for YouTube.

What is this fascination with plugging people into "the system"? Where all your social media places are morphed into one? I don't even have a Twitter, or a Facebook. In fact, the only "social media" site that I'm signed up to is YouTube.

Well...anyway. Micro-rant over now. I wouldn't even mind so much except it's a HUGE popup that not only pauses the video I'm trying to watch but I can't even click away from this invasion of privacy. If I refresh the page, it comes back. Even though I've said no, given my reasons. Now I can only say "ask me again later".

If there's an option to turn this entire thing off then I haven't seen it yet. If anyone else is having the same annoyances as me then go ahead and share.

I agree, it's really annoying, and if there's one place I don't want to use my real name it's youtube.

Heck, I've /got/ multiple social media accounts, and the youtube thing still annoys the crap out of me. If I had wanted to sign up under my real name, I would have done it in the first place. It's not like I couldn't have just set it as my username, although I may or may not have needed to append a number to get one that wasn't taken already.

This video seems to be relevant:
I just do not feel comfortable with my real name being connected to my activities online. I do not try to anger other people online, yet I don't see how giving up more information to youtube would some how decrease the amount of spam and hate that exists online. The escapist seems to have a very well thought out system which involves multiple "strikes" for dealing with the worst users.

I wonder how people with youtube partnerships deal with this crap... Will people with an established name like "Totalbiscuit" have to change all of their videos to "John Bane"? The guy doesn't try to hide his real name, but that doesn't change the fact that he is much more well known as TB than he is as John Bane.

I don't mind throwing my name around.

If someone wants to steal my identity they can pay my damn bills as well.

The thing that annoys me most about it is that I already had a Youtube account with all my subscriptions on it, and Youtube will log me out of that account and default to a named account it automatically set up for me every time I log myself into Gmail.

I already have an account why are you giving me another blanked one with my real name on it?!? I never said I wanted it to, I never agreed to anything, it just gave me a named account and made it the automatic default.

I don't want all my online activities to be connected, simply because if I say something on Youtube or if my account is hacked (unlikely but possible) it's nice to know a person can't take that and trace me back to my facebook account, email address, etc. There is a real privacy issue there, I wouldn't post half the crap I do on the Escapist if I didn't have anonymity, simply because I hate the social baggage that comes with integrating new people into your real life, whereas my Escapist account is like socialising without the added baggage. I can't have that if all my personal details are traceable, which you get with adding all your details into any public account that isn't Facebook.

EDIT: Just for fun I decided to sign into my old Youtube account. Realised the problem is that my old Youtube account is linked to my Hotmail address, my Gmail account doesn't have a Youtube account attached (because I already flipping have one) and Google has decided to intrinsically link Youtube and gmail, so in order to use my real Youtube account, I have to log out of the non-existent Youtube account Google created for my Gmail, which will also log me out of Gmail. This works both ways as logging back into Gmail to check my emails logs me out of my hotmail associated Youtube account, but strangely logging into Hotmail doesn't log me out of my Gmail Youtube account because screw logic.
I'm aware that last paragraph barely made any sense, and that's kind of the point. It creates an impenetrable web of conflicting accounts that turn each other on and off like those frustrating tile light puzzles.
This is a big stupid mess, and the real issue is that it hasn't just been done because Google thought it would be nice for the consumer, but it's been done to better track and spy on it's users, to give Google more control over us and increase their power over our daily internet usage, and for that I'd like to find the guys that thought of this and make them piss on the Youtube mainframe spark plugs.

Why don't we all enter as our youtube names the same name, just to fuck up the system?
Captcha stop trying to advertise things to me.

I actually like that idea. How great would it be to show our hate for the new system when all the comments are being made by John Doe.

Yeah, that's kinda because Google doesn't own Hotmail...

Yeah, it's annoying as hell. Doubly so because it likes to pop up when I'm typing a comment, so things go all wonky with the page (usually getting knocked back a page or two when I hit the backspace key).

The funny thing is that I haven't given YouTube my real name, so the option is meaningless anyway. I just find it supremely annoying to be asked to change my name from TheRogueWolf to Rogue Wolf.

Just type in a username rather than a real name. It's rubbish that they do that, but it seems like the easy way out.

I put in my first name, because I prefer that to a username, but I wasn't going to stick my full name up on the internet.

The sad thing about is, whenever you used to see a Chuck norris comment or Lee Everett type thing, it used to mean something because they were the first and only person who#d got that name. Now everyone does it

They can take my personal information from my cold dead hands. They don't need it and never will need it under any circumstance.

I just got around that by being logged on to youtube in Firefox, and Gmail in Internet Explorer. Not ideal, but that's how I dealt with it. The super annoying thing is that I had the same password in my youtube and gmail accounts, and my youtube is the same as my gmail without the @ gmail.com, so when I tried logging on to my account in youtube after they kicked me off to put me on my gmail account, it just assumed that I was trying to log on with my gmail account and kept telling me to use the full address. Plus I found that I can't link a youtube account with a gmail account.

OT: I had it pop up, and I told them I didn't want to use my real name, and it pissed me off every time they asked afterwords. I also hate how they keep pushing me to connect my account to my phone whenever I log in.

Not that my identity is worth stealing unless someone decides they want to pay off my car loan for me, I just use an alias for my accounts that I don't want to use my real name for.

I'm pretty sick of this too. First it was "link your gmail and YouTube accounts", and that was ok, I guess, but this is just shitty.

I also hate the fact that every site wants to be involved in some kind of (probably somehow incestuous) orgy of personal information. Fucking Facebook trying to get its grubby fingers in every single website I visit, telling me to log in through them to every site I'm visiting. Maybe I don't want all the people on my friend list (there's a misnomer if I ever saw one) to see everything I'm doing all the time. And the privacy issue aside, from a security standpoint it's goddamn retarded to link all my accounts together.

While I dislike Youtube asking to use my name, what REALLY ticks me off is yahoo mail (or is it g-mail?) asking for my phone number. It seems like I have to encounter a clingy ex-girlfriend whenever I want to check my mail!!

I personally hate how it randomly pops up to ask when they could simply put something in account options to let you change whenever you want.

I just gave them my internet name, Garyn Dakari, as my real name and my screen name. Works fine for me, and google/youtube still does not have my real name.
