being that i am suffering from a small cold, I'm thinking of using my old family remedy to ease symptoms. it consists of 1 part honey, two parts lemon juice and boiling water. drink it like tea. Do you have any home remedies? do they work? any other suggestions for colds?

Your remedy is the only one I know of apart from rest.

Rest and drugs, lots of drugs.

Given that you are in fact suffering from a VIRAL INFECTION your remedy is probably going to be about as effective as repeated whacks with a fly swatter are for lancing boils, the only real cure for a cold is rest and getting the appropriate amount of fluids.

My personal cures:

Hangover - Kim Chi ramen soup. That might not be what it's really called, but I buy them at an asian market and they're 50 cents a bowl, as well as very spicy.

Cold/Flu/whatever - spicy food, a spoon full of honey, and plenty of whining. Make sure not to mix.

Jet Lag - having to navigate a foreign airport, aka Miami.

Sprained Ankle - vulgar language and walking it off. If that doesn't work then ice, elevation, and time...sometimes in that order.

Rest, proper sleep and the right amount of liquids with a little drop of placebo can cure most anything.

Chilli/Curry. Sweat it out of you.

Doesn't work if it's flu though.
