Just watched a trailer for the game Homefront which will be released in March of 2011. I don't know if anyone else has seen this trailer or heard about this game, but basically it's about North Korea taking over the US when Kim Jong Il's son takes over as the country's leader. Now I could be wrong but this is at least the first modern game, that truly brings a military offensive directly into the US, and keeps it there. Sure there have been isolated moments in games, such as Bad Company 2, that have been set in the US, or mentioned the US as some part of an offensive, but this game at least appears to be entirely set in the US, and looks as though it touches on some sensitive issues. Anyway, does anyone think a game such as this is finally due to be set in the US, with the US being the target? This question is aimed more for Americans, but if anyone from like Europe has any opinions on this then feel free to comment. I know that other countries outside of our own must be aware of the lack of war games set in this country.

I may be mistaken but I seem to rmember something in Modern Warfare 2 where at least one enemy soldier set foot in the US.

I'd have to say the reason why so little war games are set in the Northern regions of North America is because a game about the war of 1812 would be pretty boring, and it wouldn't end with the US as the victorious faction.

I think the OP meant that the game would be set predominantly in the USA, where there was what, four or five mission of MW2 set in the States?

Yeah Homefront has gotten a lot of face time on this site.

As for my own opinion, I'm looking forward to it. As an American, I've wanted for awhile to get a chance to play a game in which my country is under attack. MW2 gave us a couple of levels but I really wanted to fight a lot more stateside.

I'm mostly looking forward to single player. From what has been revealed, it looks like the developers are trying to create a story driven experience that's more personal, (Defending a suburban home with a mother and crying baby inside) rather than the OMGZ EXPLOSIONZ feeling COD tries to bring to the table.

As for multiplayer, I don't care that much. I don't play a lot of multiplayer and I don't really enjoy modern shooters that incorporate vehicles into multiplayer that much, and this game looks like it has a heavy focues on vehicle combat.

Well I've been following this game closely pretty much since inception and honestly it just looks fantastic...

I don't always find the story a necessity, it's still just a story, a backdrop for some game mechanics to take shape in. Though I am very glad we are going away from this whole American gung ho soldier image... something more homely is welcome to me.

Though generally I just want lots of diverse stories...

Well yes, but if I'm remembering right, only 2 missions were set in the US. While this whole game is.

I must admit, the story is a bit far-fetched. It would be more believable if China invaded, or a Chinese/North Korean alliance.

I'm not sure what I think of the actual game yet, but I think its interesting to make it fully set in the US. Just wondering if anyone is offended by this concept or anything. I'm not at all, I think we're due for it, and personally I'm sick of seeing games set in Nazi Germany/Russia.

The game absolutely reeks of patriotism, which as a non American makes me feel very jaded.

Are you suggesting that this game could involve a bunch of thick-headed, bromantic American soldiers kicking Korean ass while spouting one liners in the name of democracy?
Pfft! Like THAT could ever happen! You have very silly ideas.

Really?

I would say that it's a very 'This is my home!' game but I don't see how that would throw you, it's not pummelling you with pro-American propaganda, it's just about a few people fighting for their homes and families.

Really no one won anything in the war of 1812 except for American Manufacturing. You;d be playing to a draw every time.

Yeah, It may come across as that, but I bet it would be completely biased in its story saying that America did nothing wrong, and Korea is attacking only because they "felt like it" (Cue shooting alot of Koreans in the face and no one battering a eyelid about it).

Edit: I may of disliked modern warfare 2, but it at least had the balls to tell the story from another side and letting you actually shoot Americans.

I hope it doesn't do that... from what I've seen the story seems a bit, better (for lack of a better word) than MW2s.

But yeah that'd be damn annoying...

Or South Korea via Zerg Rush.

Kekekekekekekeekekekeekekekekekekekekekekekeke.

While the story is simply lamesauce, I have to say that the idea, at the very basic element, if a good thing, which I'm sure will even out to average. Now if you could play as a Korean soldier figthing the US...

...then we might have the idea for a damn good game.

They worked quite hard on the story really and fleshed it out a lot.

Freedom Fighters from a few years back. premise? you're an all-American plumber just working, as usual, in a bor-SUDDENLY, RUSSIANS EVERYWHERE.

The rest of the game is literally running around New York trying to be the driving force behind the anti-Russian resistance, moving from place to place via the sewer network. As I recall, the game was actually awesome. Just take Red Dawn, replace the snow with dingy streets and apartments, and then replace the high school kids with grubby Noo Yoikas.
...The Saboteur?
