I've been back at uni for about a week, and after spending a month or so over christmas back home with family, I'm starting to miss them.

I pose this question to you, fellow escapists:

What things get you nostalgic about home? Or if you currently live at home, what things do you reckon you will miss when you move out?

I ran a search and nothing like this seems to have been done before, so happy posting.

The song Wake me up when September Ends by Green Day, it makes me almost cry now because I just left home in NZ and moved to Ireland a few weeks ago and everything is really different. (especially the "I'll never forget what I lost" part) or of course the last thing I said to my best friend was "well see ya!".

That must be tough, I hope you're getting on well :)
Its hard to imagine a change like that, for me leaving home consisted of a 2 hour train ride; I'm far enough away to miss them, but close enough that if it ever gets too much its easy to get back home.

Yeah and I nearly bawled it again in science when I noticed an old ruler a friend gave me way back, I'm a sap.

I just slap myself and play some games, although that might not work for everyone.
Ahhhh yes, the nostalgia of slap-happy youth...

I slap other people, then play some games.

I did get homesick when I first left for the Army. After my first birthday and christmas overseas I seem to have gotten over it. One of the most important lessons I learned in the Army is that you never remember the bad things - just the good. Looking back on basic training I tend to forget just how miserable and cold it was and only remember the fun bits. When recalling my first deployment I don't really think about the fact that I worked 80+ hours every week and instead just remember the occasional fun time I had with people.

Once your pool of highschool friends dwindles back at home, homesickness goes away.

I'm 18, and just playing games doesn't work. Unless I'm eatin' some KFC, then that alone works. I love my chicken.

Something that didn't help me when I moved out to uni was that I couldn't afford a TV lisence (which meant my PS3 stayed at home) and also, for the first month my parents were out of the country...
So I felt very alone. But I'm enjoying it now.

Sometimes I miss my cat, you wouldn't think being clawed in the face at 2am would create homesickness, but apparently it does. However, most of the time I can't get far enough from home.

Not there's anything wrong with my family, just that there's a whole world out there to explore, interesting people to meet etc...

Being out by yourself certainly is a strange feeling, but when you get back together with buddies and family, it makes the whole experience feel better.

Gamey chicken! The BEST kinda chicken.

Once I was in Bangkok by myself and it was kind of strange. I spent a day helping some Thai lady I met sell pirated DVDs at her stall.

That's certainly an odd way to deal with homesickness. Everyone is different, though!

I used to get homesick when I was younger, but now, at 25, I feel more at home by myself. I guess the fact that my parents divorced and I don't really talk to my sister, might have something to do with me being happier by myself. Home for me is where I'm at, and the best way I can recommend for you is to think about all of the great things that you can do where you are at now, just by yourself. Once you learn to appreciate those things, you wont be (as) homesick.

What will I miss? The certain air of unresponsibility.
Of course, I've been planning an around-the-world spiritual journey at some point in my life, I'll be sure to come back here when I do. In about 10 years or so.

I go to see my mum in the states for two weeks a year. When I leave, its like being torn in two. I come 'home' but it doesn't feel like home. Its like I dropped onto an alien world. The tears at the airport and the aching emptiness is horrible. I'm 26 and have done this every year for the last 10 years! It never changes. A few hours in quarantine with some music and gaming does the trick every time. You'll probably think i'm a big baby!
