Now, not many of you will remember this game but...

Homeworld was released in 1999 and was one of the first RTSs of its style.
The story started with a species (called Kushan) of people finding a ancient space ship in one of the deserts of the great desert planet of Kharak (car-rock) which leads to the further findings into the Kushan's origin after finding a significant artifact, a stone etched a galactic map showing 2 coordinates and 3 words carved into it "Hiigara. Our Home" (Hig-are-ah).

As well as having a compelling story, it has perfectly fitting music. (all of it can be found here [http://homeworld.wikia.com/wiki/Relic_Community_Homeworld_Soundtrack_2.0]).

In its day this game was renowned for many reasons; story, music, gameplay, graphics etc. It was IGN's game of the year 1999.

If your wondering why im bringing this up, i say this... I had an urge to play it one day, found the disk (it cost £0.99 about 1-2 years ago) I installed it (about 100MBs) and played it. Within 10 minutes i was having more fun then i have had with any game within 5-8 years. And i have just about ever game within these years, and still non of them compare to it. so from me, i recommend you pick this up from wherever and try it.

Ah hell yes, I remember Homeworld.

I love Homeworld 1 and Homeworld: Cataclysm for their awesome stories and single player campaigns.

I love Homeworld 2 for its militaristic and original gameplay.

I love the original Homeworld, Homeworld: Cataclysm and Homeworld 2 ^^

As well as having a compelling story, it has perfectly fitting music. (all of it can be found here ).
Also, on that link there was mention of a guy doing Remix's of some of the music, i highly recommend Deep Space

KADESHI FTW!!!!

I enjoyed Homeworld 2, but having played it and going back to Homeworld - it seems uglier, clunkier, and unforgiving. I couldn't get into it.

Homeworld was a one-in-a-million kind of game. A wondrous blend of beautiful well-designed graphics, an engaging storyline and innovative gameplay. Homeworld 2 was a refinement. I wish more games would try to mimic it...

relic is developing a homeworld 3... or so the rumor goes.
Early 2008 THQ/Relic aquired the IP for HomeWorld from Sierra/Vivendi.
in November of the same year they released heavy handed hints in an interview that they are 'definatly looking into' another home world game now that the 'IP made its way home'

So it is highly likely that we will see a Homeworld 3...
fingers crossed, hope high.

Ah, dear sweet Homeworld. Definitely one of my favourite games. As I seem to recall, even the game manual was suitably epic. I'd very much like to see a third instalment.

Hmm, I think I have the game sitting up in the loft somewhere, this makes me feel tempted to dig it out again.

Really pretty fantastic. They don't make 'em like those anymore. 1999 really was a year for gaming (so much so that I made a thread about it), and Homeworld was one of its better games.

Although I would dearly like a new one I have very little hope for one. I remember searching high and low for Homeworld 2 I eventually found it crammed in a little corner of a media play that was going out of buisness. And that was only a few months after it was released. Although in the same instant I dont want them to make a new one because I am sure they would butcher it.

Yeah im up to there at the moment, im just about to attack with a HUGE strike force, I'll do that tonight, im surprised that I haven't lost a ship, although I almost lost 2 collectors, a carrier and also the heavy cruiser I stole :p

But also a word of advice to all of you who have struggled to beat it, don't think about attacking, think about capturing, it saves you money AND makes there life harder.

Its called...Super Nova Station I think, or Super Nova Research, one of the two.

Sorry for the double post but...

Also one thing i lacked to mention; (well I did but in a turnabout kind of way.) Homeworld was how you MAKE a game, someone like me who has been gaming for 15 years on all sorts of games has found a real game, a game that ensites emotion, it gets you hooked into the story, everything about it, I love.

But alas, here come the tears (of Karan, music joke) we will most likely never see a game like this again, Relic and/or Sierra no longer own the Homeworld franchise, hear rumours of a third one, but unless its either made by the same developers as the past games or the best game in recent years (oh wait, its the same thing, :p), I won't buy it because it will be NO good.

I actually had the large story book for it, which was in effect a strategy guide. I didn't buy it for any tips it gave, I bought it learn the back story.

That game compelled me, made me actually care about the fleet because you had limited resources and a limit in fleet size (unless you stole).
Homeworld: Cataclysm actually prevented you from thefting another ship if you couldn't fit it into your fleet, but at least it gave the option to steal and salvage instead of steal and capture, which helped your resources.

Cataclysm was a spin-off story on purpose, because the developers didn't have the full rights for a sequel so they decided to make a tangent story in the same universe. HW 2 was actually the continuation of the story itself.

I remember playing it online through gamespy a few times and got my ass kicked but honestly found it very replay-able, except playing one fleet over the other offers no benefits - you only get the one storyline. (It would have been very nice to hear it from the other side, and the default race is better due to their mothership's small gun placements (yeah they are peashooters but there is a difference).

Anyway, this game was a gem, and even Electronic Gamming Monthly (EGM) which I believe no longer exists?) gave it a perfect 10 and they were very tight in giving out perfect scores.

Yes by today's standards, there is pixelation and the resolution can only be set "so high" but the series was and still is one of the best RTS game series.

8 to 10 says if HW 3 is made, it takes the "what Oblivion was to Morrowind" approach and will have a split fan base.

i found resources collection in homeworld 2 to be agonizingly slow, but i really enjoyed the combat especially with that mod that increased the amount of weapons each ship had

A really interesting game with a great story (for an RTS). I really liked that mix of Science Fiction and spirtitual perspectives.
It brought us races flying giant battlecruisers with doom lasers while still thinking in myths and legends. They do not even really comprehend the universe they live in...ah whatever ..."The Mothership Must Survive."!
Some Cutscenes really gave me Goosebumps (mmeting the last of the Bentusi in the 3rd(?) Mission of HW2...Wow!

Reminds me of Warhammer 40k and BSG.

Oh yeah, and the Homeworld Games were frustatingly difficult. ("Look 5 enemy Battlecruiser Fleets from every Side! beat them and DARE NOT losing more than one fighter or get crushed by the next wave.")
