I think there's a point being missed here.

The news isn't, "War. War never changes."

The news is that this war shaped the evolution of the Neanderthals. War in human history did not shape the evolution of humans, from a biological standpoint.

The author of the study made the Game of Thrones reference because everyone immediately can relate to it. But rather than just different families, each "house" is a different hominin, and the "winners" end up causing the extinction of the "losers."
