Heavenly Sword, demo was like 5 minutes long and left you wondering if you liked it at all.

Devil May Cry 4, crappy short demo on super easy mode, made me wonder if it'd be as bad as DMC 2, which it wasn't.
My thoughts exactly. I loved heavenly sword but the demo was... I dunno, it left me wanting more.

So the demo served its purpose, then? I'd hardly say that was a bad demo then.

Mafia 2's demo was pretty naff. 10 minutes if you didn't do the mission. Wow, pointless.

Isn't a demo that leaves you wanting more exactly what they should be aiming for? :)

But yeah, the Heavenly Sword one was WAY too short, didn't show you enough of the gameplay to make an informed decision.

I was also caught out by the Brutal Legend demo, the game rapidly goes downhill not long after that part.

The Dead Space demo was absolutely horrendous. The actual game was pretty damn good.
oh most defiantly. didnt capture the tension of the game at all. (though there's very little tension that can stand up to a fully upgraded plasma cutter ;) )

Section 8, which got decent reviews, had the most awful demo I had ever played. Throughout the whole thing, I had no idea what was going on, only that I wasn't having fun...
See, I felt the opposite way. I LOVED playing against bots in the demo, and still play it to this day sometimes. It was one of those rare occasions I got enough fun from the demo to think the main game might disappoint.

They remove the ability to adjust any game-play settings. The new trigger-release passing system feels clunky and awkward. The game pace feels slow (like pee-wee soccer slow). The game play just doesn't feel good. As a long time NHL series player, I KNOW that all such issues can be ironed out with game-play settings tweaks, but someone unfamiliar with the series probably wouldn't.
Totally agree with you on there. I know eventually ill have to give it up, but im sticking with 09. The demo that turned me off of a game I was excited for was Mafia 2. One, it was way too short. Two, the gunplay to me wasnt that great. Before I get flamed, im not comparing it to GTA 4, I know its a different game. Just doesnt seem that its a good as it should be for the amount of time they spent on it.
The gunplay thing's down to opinion, but how can a short demo turn you off of a game?

The Monster Hunter Freedom Unite demo was absolutely TERRIBLE. Seriously it puts you against some of the strongest monsters in the game giving absolutely no direction, and this is the type of game that needs hours of practice and dedication. Seriously what the hell were they thinking.

The actual game was much better though. Not my favourite game exactly but it's much much much better than the demo made it out to be.

The Deus Ex: Invisible War demo was great.
It was choppy, nonsensical, boring, buggy as hell, and crashed all the time. Just like the full game.

The Unreal Tournament demo was good, perhaps too good. I almost didn't buy the full game because I was still having so much fun playing the demo after several months!

The Deus Ex demo was perfect - it was long, challenging, heaps of fun, and left me with an intense need to acquire the full game as soon as humanly possible.

Maybe I was just tired, but I never knew what I was doing, or where I was going.

When I played the HAWX demo, the controls were tight, the graphics were nice, and the plane selection was above par. The HAWX 2 demo...well, the graphics, and I'm assmuing the plane selection, still look great and the mid-air refueling is interesting but the carrier take-off and landing sequences cause a little too much stress. Also the controls are well, they feel like I'm controlling the plane in pudding; they're not as tight as the first game's controls so I am a little worried about it right now.

In my eyes there is no such thing as a bad demo, only a demo of a bad game.
Have you played the Half Life 2: Episode 2 demo?

That's a bad demo. Of a great game.
The trailer made me laugh because it was literally none of the gameplay.

EDIT:1300th post XD

I don't know if this really counts, since the full game was (I can only assume) so terrible as well, but probably the worst game demo I ever played was Too Human. I was so looking forward to the concept of that game and was really hyped up about playing it.
But it's rare that you get barely ten seconds into the demo itself and have one of those "Oh, this is -bad-." moments. Too Human was like that for me. I kept playing it because I wanted so desperately to like it, but in the end I finally gave up on it. The fact that I had been so hyped up about it and been so completely let down makes it one of my most regretted demo experiences.

Vampire Rain. Oh wait, the game is somehow even worse.

Yh, I thoguht it was decent demo until I got to the end of the demo level again the first EX and then, just before I finished him, I died and had to start over. If someone could tell me that the full game isn't as much of a git I may still consider getting it.

No demos are particularly great in my opinion, I hardly ever bother with them. All they tell about a game is how one short section plays (a section handpicked by the developer, therefore probably the BEST section or one of the best). Games can and often do take a sharp turn into shitty territory and demos don't tell me that.

They give a basic idea of game mechanics but not enough to show if it will become overly repetitive, or if the story will become shit, or the levels will stop being interesting, or if there's not enough enemy variety, not enough weapon variety, etc etc etc.

Reviews are much more informative.

From playing inFamous' demo, I avoided the game for months. It wasn't until I played the beginning section at a friend's that I wanted to get it.

Sometimes a demo just fails to do the real game any justice.

The Need for Speed Most Wanted demo was good, until I got the full game.

Don't get me wrong, the game was great, but after playing the full version, I looked back on the demo and thought "What the hell was this supposed to tell me about the ACTUAL game?"

That was an odd turn about, I must say.

Oh yeah I remember getting stuck in the Infamous demo, hadn't thought that much of it before then. But there's another mistake demos sometimes make, they have the difficulty ramped up too far. If you can't finish the demo, you're definitely not going to buy the game!

A short demo, like Mafia 2, doesnt do enough to draw you in. I opened a door, drove, opened another door, and killed a few people. Demo over. When I play a good demo with a good length, I dont realize how long it actually was, and Im left wanting more. And I usually play it again. With Mafia 2, the demo ended, I was not impressed nor left wanting more, so I didnt touch it again. And I wont buy it until its in the bargain bin or I rent it.
