Every October I make plans to spend the month attempting to scare myself silly. Last year I used a Netflix trial to rent nothing but horror movies, but only maybe 2 of which were actually scary, and so this year I plan to do it with games, a much more immersive medium. What are your go-to games to quicken your pulse and make you leave your lights on?

Dead Space is scary, Condemned 1 and 2 and Manhunt 1 and 2 are also supposed to be scary. I can't tell you, though, because the only ones I really play are Resident Evil games, and they aren't very horrifying.

I don't freak myself out with games, that's what my personal thoughts are for.

But as for you, you could always try Dead Space or Silent Hill (top of my head, never actually played either)

Silent hill 2
Condemned: Criminal Origins
Call of Cthulu: dark corners of the earth
Dead Space
The Suffering: Prison is hell
FEAR has it's moments but it's not as scary as the above.

Project Zero [fatal frame] 2: Crimson Butterfly.

Ghosts and twin girls, you cannot get scarier then that.

Also Siren: Bloodcurse is pretty creepy.

Dead Space, Dead Space Extraction, Silent Hill 2: Restless Dreams, The Suffering, and although not very scary a list of horror games would not be complete without House of the Dead: Overkill.

I'm not into horror games anymore (grew out of them), but I always thought a trip back to Silent Hill 1 is as good a pants-peeing experience as any.

Silent Hill 2 is a better game overall, but it's more disturbing than actually scary. Fatal Frame II is also said to be terrifying.

Definitely Dead Space, Condemned 2 I found scarier than the first. Dead Rising can be scary at times too if zombies freak you out. Every time I play it I wind up having f**ked up dreams of zombie apocalypses!

For me its Silent Hill 2 & 3, Dead Space and to an extent Bioshock. Oh and Resident evil 2, that game STILL makes me jump after all these years and multiple play throughs...

Thief Deadly Shadows is scary as hell, especially the penultimate mission. The Penumbra series of games are pretty scary too, and you can get them on Steam for really cheap. Both are great for post-midnight pants-wetting sessions.

The only games I've ever found to be "Scarey" are the silent hill games (Mainly the 2-4), Condemned 1-2 (1 and the beginning of 2 mostly), and I guess some parts of "Fear" (Hardly worth mentioning, but it did have a few truely horrifying scenes.) RE was just a shooter with zombies replacing the terrorists and Nazis for me. Dead Space was only scarey at the beginning and during that "Invincible alien" part, y'know, when running like a frightened school girl is the mission objective, the rest was just a bunch of predictable jump out scares, and jump out scares are hardly horror.

Dead Space is good for a jump or two, and it has a pretty creepy atmosphere (or a complete lack of atmosphere, harr harr).

Codemned 2 was scary too, but started getting a little weird towards the end...

The House was... Oh god, no.

FEAR 2 is mildly scary, I guess. It's a good shooter either way.

Awesome suggestions. I'm already up to my nipples in Silent Hill 2. I've been wanting to play the Fatal Frame games as well, though those still sell for around $40. Dead Space kind of bored me after one night, but I did just play through Ravenholm in Half-Life 2 again. Talk about a swift shift in gears.
