It's that time of year again and I'm sure many of us are looking for some scary movies to watch. My own tastes are a little odd, or so I think, so I'm interested in a little help but feel free to co-opt the thread for your own searches.

Personally, I like things that are a little more psychological but am not afraid of a little blood and gore. Ghosts are more appealing to me than monsters. I also hate zombies and find them to be the antithesis of anything entertaining or scary. In the past I've enjoyed things like The Ring, The Grudge and The Woman in Black.

Any recommendations for me?

If you're a big fan of the horror genre, I would strongly recommend grabbing "Cabin in the Woods" [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1259521/?ref_=nv_sr_1]. One of my favorite horror movies ever that is both scary and good at taking the piss out of the horror genre. A group of teenagers go out to a cabin in the woods (what a twist!) when murder starts to happen but not all is as it seems. A great movie that I would strongly recommend. Knowing the horror genre isn't required but I think it does make it a bit better. Bonus Points; it's on Netflix

"The Signal" [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0780607/?ref_=nv_sr_1] is another...quirky horror film (I love me some quirk). The movie is about all electronic devices (TVs and radios primarily) start sending out a signal that causes people that listen to it to go insane (IE "The Crazies" [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0455407/?ref_=nv_sr_1]...actually, I'd recommend that one too). The movie tells the story of three different characters during the apocalypse but in a really cool twist, they're going insane during their story! You get to from their point of view, which is really cool and has some...very interesting things happen because of it. Bonus points; it's on Netflix.

If you're sick of my quirky movies and just want some straight-up horror, a commonly overlooked gem that was recommended to me by everyone's favorite Mod/Film Reviewer, Quarantine 2 [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1699231/?ref_=nv_sr_2]. The zombie-like virus is back and this time it's in an airport terminal! A surprisingly good zombiesque movie, this one is just straight horror; no quirks allowed! I know you hate zombies so you'll probably not like it at all but I figured someone might stumble into the thread and give it a go :) And guess what? Bonus points; it's on Netflix!

There are always the classics too (Freddy Krueger, Jason Vorhees, Chucky, etc.) but I figured you'd know about them already. These two primary recommendations are not the best horror movies but they're different in their own unique way that give them special tippy2k2 points.

Did I go out of my way to recommend that? I can't remember doing so. (It's possible. I like it. But I can't remember actually doing that. XD)

OT: Let's see. I'm going to occasionaly stretch the definition of "horror" here, but ... they'll all be creepy or scary, mmkay?

Creep (2004), The Descent (2005), Martyrs (2008), Bug (2007), Orphan (2009), The Children (2008), The Strangers (2007), Stoker (2013), Cube (1997).

You did not directly recommend it to me like Rubber or Scorpion King 3: Electric Boogaloo but it was one of your reviews back in the day. I was bored and absolutely hated the first one but after reading your recommendation (namely, it had nothing to do with the first one in story, style, or really anything), I went for it.

Also to the OT; I don't think Rubber [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1612774/?ref_=nv_sr_1] would count as horror but it is a hilariously awesome mind-bender of a film that I would strongly recommend. People do die and explode due to a psychic tire that rolls around so one could make a stretch and call it horror :D

Also...Guess what!?!? That's right, Netflix strikes again!

Ah, okay. That makes more sense. Cool. Glad you liked it.

OT: I'll also second Rubber. It's a meta-horror like Cabin in the Woods. Good fun. Tippy loves it. ;D

Well the OP did watch the Ring and the Grudge so I think it'll be ok with subs. Tale of Two Sisters is ok, not super scary but a neat psychological film.

I suppose I could recommend the Orphanage as well, nb Spanish film. Oh hell, why not REC? That's more of a high tension fucking fast and brutal horror film, but goddamn, it's great.
I usually see the originals referred to as Ju-On The Grudge and Ringu, and the english remakes as Grudge and Ring, not to argue, could totally mean the originals though, can always be hopeful.

Also Orphanage is pretty good and double so for REC, but REC is kind of zombie-ish, I wouldn't mind recommending The Eye (the asian one, Korean?), but that's a little slower, not all that scary but fun at times.

EDIT: Also 2002's Korean "Phone" is another one I like.

Obvious suggestions but:
Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street (original, not remake), The Exorcist, Alien (if you like your horror with a sci-fi twist), and The Mist are all pretty excellent, well worth a watch if there's any you haven't seen already.

Also I'd definitely second Cabin in the Woods, it's better than a lot of the horrors it's parodying.

Eraserhead, Altered States, Videodrome, Society, Alfred Hitchcock movies, A Tale of Two Sisters, Rosemary's Baby, John Carpenter's "Apocalypse Trilogy", Mermaid in a Manhole (as well as the rest of the Guinea Pig series), Beyond The Black Rainbow, Noroi, The Eye (not the remake), Dark Water (also not the remake), Session 9, Jacob's Ladder, Event Horizon, The Shining, Berberian Sound Studio, Cube, and Hour of the Wolf.

While we're on the topic of horror, I remember seeing on youtube a while back a channel that uploaded a bunch of different Japanese Horror Anthology and Dark Tales of Japan shorts. Anyone know what happened to it?

The Innkeepers!

A supposedly haunted hotel is closing down after 200 years, and its two night clerks are determined to finally prove, once and for all, that the ghost story associated with the building is in fact true. There are few actual shock scenes - most of the movie's horror value is purely atmospheric. It does a wonderful job of drawing you in, and as night falls and things start to go 'bump', the mounting sense of dread affects the viewer every bit as much as the cast!

I found A Nightmare on Elm Street to be quite lacking, if I'm honest.

I much prefer psychological stuff, and would recommend Eraserhead (which unnerved me far more than any other film; second only to Silent Hill 2 (the game) as a horror experience), Don't Look Now, Rosemary's Baby, Invasion of the Bodysnatchers, and Misery.

Noone's mentioned Misery yet? For shame!

Some really good ones came out this year in Sinister and The Conjuring. Insidious: Part II was also pretty good as well. It you're up for a slower one, I'd recommend Session 9. And while it's not a movie, the youtube series Marble Hornets gets downright terrifying. Each season (There are three) when watched as a whole is about the length of an hour and a half movie anyway.
Hell yeah, The Conjuring. I just finished watching it. Started at 9PM, alone in the house, no lights.

I'm no believer, but I thought it was a solid movie.

Santa's Slay. Probably the best horror film no one has ever heard of. The premise was stupid, which is why we got it. The writing was surprisingly clever, it had plenty of humor, and there were actually some well known stars in it. If you like Scream, you'll probably like this. The Cabin in the Woods is good as well. It has the added advantage of making every other horror movie better by default.

As far as legitimately "scary" films go? I can't think of many. The Birds, of course. IT is always a winner. Maybe The Stand, or The Shining.

Cube and Cube 2: Hypercube...

I wish I was joking, but I'm being serious here... From the psychological perspective, these movies work in that regard... (with Cube 2's ending only being that final drawback, in my opinion...)

Also, look up some Troma movies... That time I'm only kinda joking... Just slightly... But, kinda not...
