You have to make a fitting punishment, one more severe than what the average gamer is used to. Dark Souls is a good example of you losing all of your valuable experience points. Minecraft has a Hardcore mode that makes it impossible to continue playing if you die. Or you could down the route of having a severely gory death that you simply don't want to witness as in Dead Space or Resident Evil.
