School's tough, we all know that. People say there's billions of dollars waiting for you to pick it up in terms of grants, scholarships, etc. I've applied for several hundred and I've gotten one 600 dollar one in the last 2 years.

The thing of it is, I really want to study abroad in Japan or South Korea, somewhere where I can get the best first-hand experience with microelectronic and mechanical engineering. I do work but it barely covers rent due to the hours and as mentioned I get very few scholarships despite having a 3.035 GPA (Not something to boast I'll admit but it's well above the requirements). I've already taken out a small student loan but I don't want to take out any more.

How old are you and are you willing to wait a year to begin your studies?

If you're over 18 you could get a job in South Korea teaching English for a year, very easy way to save money as they pay you a salary and will usually cover your living costs (except food but it's very cheap to live there if you're smart).

It's a really fun way to learn some of the language and see some of the country on somebody else's dime. The job's kinda fun too.

Do that for a year and you won't have a full amount but a little nest egg to help you along, plus you can freelance a bit while studying to help with bills and such.

It kind of depends on where you are really.

If you're in a country that has cheap university fees (or free), I would suggest looking at universities that offer a year abroad in their course; I myself am going to be spending a year in Japan, starting from? well, less than a week XD

Sure it may not exactly be studying in Japan for the whole 3-4 years of a course, but its certainly a cheaper option.
