Or Doom. The game is legendary. It's easily more important than Halo in FPS history, but there's no mouse-look (no looking up or down either), no jump, and hitting moving targets far off in the distance can be really irritating thanks to the auto-z-axis aiming. It would be a tough sell to an audience that came up on more advanced games with better control schemes.
Actually it is not such a hard sell, because id released the source code and there are numerous source ports which fix those problems. The only big downside is the graphics. It's not just the fact that they were done in 1991. It is the fact that putting Doom in a proper 3d environment means the sprites look weird when you look up or down at them. There are 3d models, but these are fan made and rather amateurish.

I must confess to not having played any Nintendo games except those Game & Watch things that were around in the mid 80s. On the other hand, I did get to enjoy great games on the Amiga, stuff like Cannon Fodder, Elite 2: Frontier, Lemmings, Populous 2, Exile, Civilization, UFO: Enemy Unknown aka XCOM: UFO Defense, Floor 13, The Settlers, and a decent conversion of Rainbow Islands. All this stuff seems to be criminally absent from 'must play' lists made by Nintendo fans.

Video games are very context sensative. Play Space Invaders in the late 70s and it's the most amazing thing ever. Experience it for the first time a decade later and you probably won't have the same experience. I'm old enough to have experienced Pac-Mania first hand and count Pac-Man Fever as the first album I ever bought with my own money. I can't imagine trying to explain this to some even a decade younger.

As for OoT, my eyes glaze over the second I heard fantasy RPG. Not the standard fantasy setting of D&D fame, but close enough to run into my anti-fantasy bias. Checking it out on Wikipedia, it's one of the most influential RPGs of all time and I have no doubt it's a quality game... but I have no interest in playing it. I hadn't even heard of it until about six months ago, as it was outside my interests.
I actually played them both when they first came out. But I agree games are very context sensative and when played in later years alot of games even though were considered amazing or revolutionary are just meh.
Pac-Man is such a weird game for me. I never really liked it that much, but I was thoroughly caught up by Pac-Mania. Loved Ms. Pac-Man though, a game far superior to the original.

Kind of feel the same way about Space Invaders. Bit of a childhood obsession that I only ever bothered to play a few times. Don't think I ever bothered to buy the 2600 port.

Bought the 2600 Pac-Man at release. Still can't figure that one out :)

I know someone who didn't know what the F*** a PS was, and he was neither 40+ or 4- ... seriously, never heard of the Playstation!?? And he has an Xbox... oh and some guy I met at a party asked me what a cell-phone was... although I think that might have to do with the heavy drinking making him miss large chunks of memory, but hey... cellphones...

It's not famous outside gamer circles...whilst Pacman, Mario and the like were everywhere.

This thread is seriously depressing me.

Some games like the Ocarina of Time or Zelda are classic for a reason. And even if you're not interested in them, you should at least see what they're about. Even if you hate them, you should check them out so that you can realize why you hate them. Those who tried them and disliked them, alright. That's fine. But not even giving them a chance? Maybe that's just me, but there are tonnes of games or movies older than me that I have tried and seen.

I found a major flaw in your statement. You dont seem to understand how common sense works. The person plays games and the games that he plays are good. Now just because they dont care or havnt played something that a very vocal community can stop sucking off is meaningless.

Here is one that will blow your mind, I thought ff7 sucked and wasnt really a fan of ocarina of time, infact both bored me enough that I never bothered to finish either. Not everybody shares the same taste in games as you, I thought that would be extremely obvious on a forum like this.

Here is another one, I have never played KOTOR or any other star wars game. This is because they dont interest me in the slightest bit.
Never playing any Zelda game, is a big failure.
That guy who plays nothing but CoD, disdains Nintendo because it is childish, and thinks every new CoD is the best game ever, is a failure.

I think it is common sense to listen to other people, and play a game that a great many of people consider is a very good game.
I'm not saying you have to love it, but you should still try it.

lol, and you show why I rarely talk about stuff like this.
I don't get how someone can play every CoD, say it is the best game ever, but never have played Doom, Duke Nukem, or Halo.

Top that? Sure.

On topic: If you haven't played Diablo 1/2 you've missed out on a major touchstone.

Since OoT is not available for the PC (well legally), the 360, the Ps2 or PS3, I would have to make an investment of over $100 to play a game from a genre and setting that do not appeal to me.

Ain't gonna happen.

I would be shocked and appalled by anyone who has never heard of the Pokémon series.

For purely personal reasons, I'm also surprised by those who owned a Gamecube and never played Harvest Moon. D:

My gentlemen I present you with a task to top this: 98% of the people that surround me have never heard of an XBOX (360), also haven't watched Star Wars, think there's only a Nintendo game console (no Wiis, Gamecubes, SNESes, 64s) just Nintendo, gamers only play Counter-Strike 1.6 and play PES (there are two guys I know of that have played an RPG, one is my brother, second is his friend)...

This is getting too long.
May I ask what country you live in? I'm just curious as to where nobody's ever heard of anything beyond a Nintendo, yet somebody still has the money to buy a PC and enough food to live off of.

I hope that doesn't sound bad...
Bosnia. It's not a (very) poor country, but the people are uninterested in technology, which you may blame on electronic retailer(s) who don't actually get any merchandise and a Wii costs 500$ in the countries just next to Bosnia and an iPhone 4G (used) is some 1000$. Also the prices are laughable compared to the salaries, my mom makes 500$ a month as a full-time teacher (40 hours a week) and it's considered above average so people aren't really waiting for midnight launches and raging over every piece of technology.

I know people who say they play games often but say "what's that?" when I mention the Snes and the Nes.
Bad times. Bad times.

Uh, I own a Gamecube, but I've only played Harvest Moon on the SNES. So... not really sure where I fit in there. I did love the game, though.

You've kind of lost me here .... I view games as a form of entertainment. I've played good ones and I've played bad ones. I've played quite a few some would consider to be the greatest ever and come away disappointed, it doesn't mean the others people are wrong it just means its not a game I enjoyed.
When I played Doom and Dune 2 I thought they were the greatest ever, same with Deus Ex and the Half Life series. Possibly Diablo ruined a certain aspect for me as it introduced me to the concept of random levels, where 90% of the game is unique (pretty much) each play through. So games like Kotor/BG/Mass Effect while being really good on first play through bore me very quickly as everything is the same on each play through (ok not 100% everything but you get my point).
Defining a game as being so brilliant I have to tell other people about it has to be weighed against who I'm talking to, no point recommending DoD Source to someone who doesn't play online or only has a console.
I find the whole "this game is so awesome ... there must be something wrong with you if you haven't played it" view to be much like the hype surrounding games on their initial release .... just that hype, intended to get you to invest in the title.
Which is why I'm quite happy to wait for 6 months or so after a game is released to actually get some decent feedback on it before I'll buy. I don't think anyone can honestly say that playing a particular game made a huge difference to their life .... unless you were playing GTA and forgot to pickup your Dad ..... who walked home and got hit by a truck ;)
