How come no one's allowed to hate stuff anymore?

I try to accept that everyone has different tastes and if they provide legitimate reasons am fine with them not liking something that i do like. My rule, if they have tried it and have a reason for not liking it, i'm fine with it. If they just randomly decided they don't like it, i'll have issue.

But truth be told i'm not completely faithful to this rule and wouldn't mind using manipulation to spark a war between Sonic fans and Twilight fans with the hope that they kill each other off, so maybe my position is a weak one.

For me, you can hate whatever you like. However, it's trying to convince me I'm wrong, or make me hate something that I have an issue with. It's completely a matter of taste. Who really gives a damn if I don't like Black Ops or WoW or whatever? If you like it, go for it and enjoy it too!

Also now I have to have bacon.

As someone who takes great pleasure in hating things, I agree wholeheartedly with you. While I don't think its okay to dislike something for absolutely no reason (this also applies to liking stuff as well) if you've got a reason and you don't like it, fuck it- go nuts.

It can be fun to have a light-hearted argument with someone that loves what you hate- my husband and I do it constantly- but I understand what you mean when you air how frustrating it is that some people can't seem to let it go and accept that, for your own reasons, you can't agree with them.

As for using the word "hate", why not? Yes it's a strong word, but fuck it, if that's how you feel, that's how you feel, even if its just a vocabulary choice to illustrate your point. People throw the word "love" around excessively as well and no one seems to be making a big deal out of that.

I don't mind people who dislike sth for a very specific but even mildly understandable reason. as for the others, i try to show them that their ire is unjustified if they change their opinion, great! if not, big deal! Ironically, you're the one who should chill out, man.
(example, a friend of Mine hates Black Ops and he will never touch it and will always hate it. why? because he has this notion that Treyarch "betrayed" Infinity ward and stole their franchise. i told him "you know Black Ops would have come out even if IW hadn't disbanded right?" to which he said "....i... uhh.... shut up!" so i just leave him be. i like the game, but he's not gonna be any less of a friend of mine for hating/disliking it)

I just wanted to comment on this statement, I think you understood the concept wrong.

"Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system by interfering with adenosine receptors. These receptors are believed to inhibit dopamine neurotransmission, thereby decreasing motor activity. Thus, caffeine may directly maintain dopamine levels and normal neural function."

In my eyes bacon and coffee are a great combo. Generally you cant have one with out the other, but i mean just saying you dislike something which is generally conserved to be good in the eyes of the public, (good as in tastes nice not as in good for you.) Is like saying you dislike a band which is popular at the time, but they still acted surprised when its clearly not your genre of music. So to be perfectly honest, you are great to stand up against the norm. I know I've been on the other hand and been judged just cause I dislike all the popular music at the time when I was about the only person in my year at school that didn't listened to music that involved some half dressed woman dancing on my screen, or some television contest winner "singing" their cover of a well known song.

I don't like Final Fantasy. I get the appeal it would have for people but it's just not an enjoyable game for me. However, I dropped this apparent atomic bombshell at the London MCM Expo and received a hell of a lot of scorn for it.

It wasn't even that I was saying it maliciously; one of my friends pointed out a cosplayer and how their costume was pretty accurate to some character (big hair, carries a ball of some kind) and said the character's name (I have no idea who) and I asked them "who?" they repeated the name and I said "I still don't know who you're talking about, are they from an anime or something?" When they told me where the character was from I said "oh, well I don't really like Final Fantasy all that much so..." and then I was cut off by a various people saying "how can you NOT like Final Fantasy?" and so on.

Got all the usual replies; calling me a Halo fanboy (even though I'm not, I'm actually a Silent Hill fanboy) saying that I "just don't get it" and that it's "obviously too complex for you".

I honestly didn't really care what they thought or said, I was just amazed that it brought such a reaction. It's really not the best RPG series ever made, I reserve that spot for the Ultima series.

Allow me to clarify my statement:

Many times I have been in the middle of a pleasant conversation with a person or group of people and the topic drifts around until this person/these people proceed to exclaim how they worship something like coffee or bacon, making clothes out of it, bathing in it, mixing it with the blood of virgins, etcetera. I hate the tastes and smells and nutritional benefits (or lack thereof) of both of these products and upon informing people of this, I seem to incur their wrath.

Why am I not allowed to hate bacon? It's disgusting and has obvious health risks.

And coffee, not only does it stain your teeth, but it inhibits the production of dopamine in your brain. And that's important.

Come now people this abuse has to end. It seems that now that we've at least made it socially unacceptable to not be tolerant in most of today's industrialized world, we have to stoop to alienating people who aren't interested in things that a group of people feel are good.

I do not alienate people for liking coffee or bacon or whatever it is that they like, so why must I be ostracized by people for not liking these things? Is my argument not valid? Is it not the one that in fact has scientific basis and is not held up by the loose assertion that 'it is just the best thing ever.'

And in case you are wondering, I have actually lost friends over this. There is a group of people who actually yell loudly about how magnificent coffee and bacon are whenever I enter a room.

So escapists, I ask you this:
Have you ever been the one to attack another for not liking 'awesome' thing x?
What other things have you found induce such irrational behavior in your fellow humans?
Have you ever been the victim of such abuse?
And do you, like me, believe people should totally chill out about such things?

And yes, I am aware that many people will be urged to childishly quote me and write how bacon/coffee is amazing, regardless of the facts, even just to 'kid' with me, so I would like to formally request, anyone who wishes to preform the above atrocity, please take a good introspective look at your life and whether you would like to be known as the one who sided with the cults of bacon/coffee. And if you find that you still want to, I suggest you buy a lifetime supply of the item and concentrate on it and not this thread.

And also, I dislike intensely every single Call of Duty game. I do not like the whole realistic shooter thing. I believe the point of video games, literature and art in general to be the ability to escape the realm where the laws of the universe apply.

Edit: OK I understand, hate is a strong word. My hatred began only as dislike, but I was bashed so much for this it polarized into what I call, very casually, hatred. Still, I try to use the word sparingly and hope its casual use on this post has not seriously offended anyone.
Also! I never attempted to drill into anyone's head that they shouldn't eat/drink bacon/coffee!
I simply tell people that one of the reasons for my dislike/hate/whatever you want to call it stems from the negative values toward your health from the products.

Edit(2):Ok, I get it. Hate is a strong word. I will cease using it. Now, how about we move on to the issue at hand and disregard my word choice.
Let me rephrase the issue: Why is no one allowed to disagree with popular opinion anymore?

Actually, that's simple, we aren't allowed to because people love having their opinions fed to them, and what doesn't "conform" is taken down. Like the gay/bi haters, only even less complex, since gay/bi haters are often based on religion etc.

Just ignore the dumbasses and move on, you don't need them anyways.

PS: you're not alone, we don't have decent bacon here (Fr), so I can't say much about it, but I do hate coffee, even the smell disgusts me.

So I didn't read any of the posts other than the opening one. That's your context.

Judging purely from the way you write, then on the specific topic of bacon and coffee, I imagine that the real issue your friends have is that (in my quickly constructed imaginary scenario) you dislike them more for the health issues rather than the taste etc. (although these may also contribute) and as the health risks are not apparent at a young age and, I would imagine, not that severe unless you abuse them, then it seems they're likely just taking the piss because you might have come off as prudish or something to that effect.

Thank you for accepting my word choice and recognizing the similar abuse of the word love.

Also, I do not despise a light hearted argument. I only hate when people beat the topic into the dirt, bringing it up at random and such.

Thank you for your help with this, in a non-condescending way, though it has already been cleared up (in a much more argumentative, grumpy way)

Also, I love French culture (even more after hearing about the bacon thing) I took French throughout all of high school (though that helped more to inspire admiration of the French than to actually help me learn the language) and it is one of the places I am considering moving to after college.

Well, hating bacon is unacceptable.

I'm joking, but man... I fucking love bacon.

The biggest 'not allowed to hate' thing is music. People wheel out the 'be open minded' defence (anime fanboys are probably worst for this actually), when I say I hate something. Apparently hating anything makes you a bad, unenlighened person.

I appreciate you adding your context, for this sort of thing has been discussed already.

The conversation goes like this: (and bear in mind the last statement is exaggeration)

Person X: Well I built a house out of bacon this morning.

Me: I don't really like bacon.

X: What how can you not like bacon??!!!1one1!!!??

Me: It's too greasy and it's bad for you.

X: You're a freak and must be strung up by your pinky toes in the town square to be ridiculed.

Yes, this is true. As has been demonstrated on this topic previously, anyone who comes out as a hater of the Beatles, (such as myself) gets attacked for not liking the supposed innovation of the (in my opinion) bland pop band.
