How could you compare games?

Games are tremendously different from genre to genre, and as we all know, some people have certain preferences. Often people will gravitate towards saying that their preferred genre offers better games. (Halo is better than Civilization 4). Most websites offer universal ratings into whether or not a game is good, often in the form of numbers or percentages, which is a blanket label for all games to be compared against each other. Is this system of rating good? Can RTS's or Puzzle games be compared to FPS's and RPG's? Should they be judged separately, or is it entirely your own opinion on which one is better?

The system is meant to compare games to others in its genre - hence why certain poor games get higher mark than higher polished games in another genre. People don't seem to realize this however and compare everything against everything.

I don't, I just play them, beat them, siphon the remaining entertainment value from them, and move on. If I deem them to have sufficient renewable entertainment value. I buy them.

Okay, personally, I think it's fair enough to say that you prefer some game which is say.. a first person shooter to some other game which could be a puzzle game, but to say something like "Mortal Kombat's fighting system is much better than the melee on FPS games" is pretty abstract. Okay, bad example but what I'm trying to say is that certain genres shine in certain areas, so I think its fine to say which game you prefer, but when people start comparing small things to totally different genres it annoys me.

Also, I personally don't find many things wrong with the rating system, people review a game on how good they think it is.

I think they should work on having people who like the genre give a review and then someone who is not familiar with the genre give a counter point review. It would give those who would like to get into the genre a better understanding. I think one magazine does something similar but I can't remember which one that is at the moment.

Also your opinion on a game should be the most important.

By genre ideally. They are meant to offer different experiences so the only comparisons to be made are how much they were enjoyed really.

Although even then, I only compare games when they have enough similarities, for example: I preferred Gears of Wars' cover system to Army of Twos'.
