I hate my school and lots of the people who work there. The technicians are idiots. They disabled our ability to lock PCs in case we need to go somewhere, and they disabled the task manager from students. Also, they disabled my account because I kept installing Firefox 3 portable onto my documents since we only have crappy Firefox 2 (changed from Mozilla to FrontMotion for some arbitrary reason) on all the PCs. They said that I should use the school one as it's set up, and all that needs changing is the proxy settings which I can do.

Tell me how crap your IT technicians are.

Our servers ability to print anything went down for 2 days due their attempts at making it run faster. Gave me a good excuse for handing in stuff late :)

Just play ball. Don't install portable applications because that pisses everyone off. My highschool used Internet Explorer, Citrix, and an overzealous web filter.

You're at school to do work - just do your research with what they have, and do whatever you want at home.

Our IT technicians are so bored with their own jobs that they bought a sort of switchboard that allows them to take a look at any computer being used in the school at any time. The take immense pleasure in catching someone playing games and not working so then they can disable the account. then, they force you to say: "Arsenal are the best" before unblocking your account.

Our IT guys are pretty cool. I haven't had any problems with them yet. In fact, I've played some UT99 on the school network and nobody cares.

However, the network will go down from time to time without warning, and when they send out e-mails telling you that they'll be doing work, they always send them out the day of, at 8:00AM, long before I wake up. They seem to love doing their work over the afternoon, which is exactly when I needs my interwebs. Besides that, they're cool guys (I assume).

Bahahahaha! That's the kind of tech I'd be. . .as it stands though, in a branch office with only 6 people and all IT staff off site, I'm the only super user on location. I get away with a great deal because I'm an 'RMA Tech' and need to do things in the process of 'Testing' ^_^

As for my school. . .went to college for Computer Network Administration, and the schools opinion was 'if you can't figure out how to get around our security and install games or break things then fix them before we find out, then you're in the wrong class'. . .greatly enjoyable hehe

*Laughs* Yes that does seem like your typical school IT tech sense of humour. Its strange, I have to disagree with the viewpoint on IT technicians so far, I think the team at my school have done a really good job. Remote access doesn't work the best at home but aside from that the computers run efficiently and fast, its all you can ask for at high school really.

I AM a school tech and I have to say...I'm pretty cool. I could give 2 shits about games. I had to be an asshole and block myspace facebook and youtube because kids were skipping class to sneak into the lab and fuck around on myspace and facebook. Then I caught a kid watching asian chicks making out on youtube so I had to shut that down too.

The only things that really gets me pissed are proxies. The kiddies don't understand what malware and spyware are apparently, then they wonder how their passwords got phished.

It's just the luck of the draw I suppose, when it comes to your IT department

My dad and my brother both work as IT technicians.

Personally, I've never had a problem with IT staff when I was at school or college.

At my school,IT technicians are mostly teachers(some of which work at the European Virtual Reality Center) so it's hard to say anything bad....

Except for one thing.

One particular program we have installed requires a license to be checked every-so often and to reduce costs, our school bought only about 12 or so (which is enough,in theory) and a server hands us a link to a license so we can use the program, hence not needing one license on one unique computer forever.

All good and dandy until some people don't quit the program upon ending their sessions, meaning when the next people load the program,a second license will be attributed.
Nobody notices at first, but after a couple minutes, you get a dreaded error message which says something in the lines of:

"License not found.
You have 2 minutes to get a license before the program shuts down.
And by the way, saving is disabled.
Suck on that,*****"

Upon which you see a 120Kg,60 year old man sprinting through the halls to the server room cursing out the name of the class that came before.

One of the only times I ever laughed(fat sprinter) and cried(lost 1 hour worth of work) at the same time.

At school, the IT guys were fairly okay. Some of the lads (read: geeks) did wind them up a few times though. But I think those stories are possibly for another topic....

Our IT techs are pretty coo, actually. Nevertheless, you should be thankful for firefox, we get an old version of IE.
And i don't beleive we can have task manager or station locking either. Not suire that that's actually up to them though.

I actually had sympathy for the technicians at my school, or to be more specific, the technician. This poor guy had to try and keep all 400 laptops given to the idiot freshmen running. There were annoying tech issues, but I don't blame the poor bastard.
