how do i compare graphics cards?

so, how do i compare graphics cards?

i never understood how to compare an ATI Radeon HD 3800 series to anything else, do i see which has a higher number on the end? what?

basicly, how do i know which graphics card is better.

EDIT: okay, i don't think i was clear, i'm not replacing my graphics card, i want to know how to compare it to game specs.

On the Toms Hardware site that has been linked it has a list of game benchmarks to show you which cards preform better at what games.

Benchmarks being your keyword if you want to Google.
