I would say try to research some good setups and strategies, but that boring.
Try to think up the craziest weirdest strategies and put them into use. You might even do well due to the other players not knowing how to react effectively. But most of all, just try what feels like fun. Even if that means running around with scavenger and throwing tomahawks at anything that moves. Remember that having fun in a game doesn't always require getting the most kills or topping the leader-boards.

All pretty valid options so far.

Myself, I used Extended Mags at first, no matter what gun (grip if SMG, use Warlord Perk for both) until I got used to the level of recoil kick with each weapon, av. number of hits it takes to nail someone and reload times. The reason for ex. mag is because the amount of times I've been killed while reloading is insane, and NOT having to reload straight after an exchange means you can get those kills where their team mate rushes in after seeing their friend go down. Reload later, when you are certain nobody is coming and the coast is clear.

Used to use the M16 with a reflex sight, then moved on to the Galil with Reflex scope and Ex. Mag.

All-round useful perk package I found was Ghost/Scavenger, Warlord/Hardened and Hacker. The first two are interchangeable depending on if your opponents took Spy Plane or RC-XD as their kill-streak, the second interchangeable depending on if you want/need two attachments on your weapon.

I play Hardcore almost exclusively though, only really play regular style Domination or CTF, so have classes that are fast and nippy for objective grabbing (cause, lets face it, it seems the overwhelming majority of Domination players on the losing side seem to just camp up and go for killstreaks, and for some reason I always join the losers...)

The contract system isnt a bad way to get better, since there are several that require weapon specific goals that was a good way for me to get to know various guns. Personally I played alot of Hard Core Domination HQ and Demolition on Nuketown and once i hit lvl 50 the first time i stayed there and didnt prestiege. I just bought all the guns and attachements untill i had em all. Afterwards i went several hours just fiddling around with different combos untill i found the ones i liked best.

A lot of practice, and a little thought.
Experiment. Check what works well and what doesn't. It may bring your K/D down, but it's only a stat.
Higher Sensitivity. Bump up 1 level an assess your comfortability and practicality.
Figure out a good killstreak combo. Easy to use and high kill potential with easy access.

No shit.

OT: Time travel back to 2007 and play CoD4. If you are still having troubles by the time you reach now, just stop playing, because you will never be good a CoD. I'm guessing you are one of those kids that bought blops because of the "trendyness" of it. Just stop playing it right now and burn your console.
Actually I couldn't care less for game popularity. I borrowed Black Ops just cause I'd never really tried my hand at a CoD game before, just formed a natural dislike of them. I thought I'd try to get some actual first-hand experience of it.
Well if you didn't like them before, you definitely picked the wrong one to give it a try!

Nope, it's official. This game is impossible, it sucks, and I want to nuke the Treyarch headquarters then hunt down and kill the families of those responsible for spawning it.

In short: FUCK THIS GAME!

You can practise the game, but the game itself is so poorly made that you're just going to get frustrated. The constant endemic lag is absurd. This is a game where you can shoot right at someone and still be 10 meters wide! Frankly Treyarch are hopeless and they dn't seem to be taking much of an interest. They'are a joke.
I did notice this problem. I'm not the best shot at any given time, but I know for a fact that during a few Domination games I played I was aiming RIGHT at an enemies chest. yet they took no damage and killed me easily. then when watching the Killcam I saw that my character seemed to be, from their point of view, aiming massively to the side or even, at one point, shooting at the floor as if I was a spaghetti western villain trying to make my opponent dance.

I'm actually really frustrated with the game - correction treyarch. They just don't seem to give a tupenny toss. As a player I have no idea whether any of these issues are going to be fixed. Consequently i've paid £42 for a useless plastic disc.
This is probably the main reason I'm done with this shit. Even if your shots are perfectly on-target, if your internet connection isn't perfect you might as well just run up to them randomly slashing your knife like that ninja dude in Indiana Jones...ya know, the one who does the fancy sword shit then gets blown away with minimal effort?

It just becomes irritating that I can blast someone clear in the back with an assault rifle then they turn round and with a random spray of bullets, only 2 of which actually hit me (on the killcam it looks like he shot me in the legs) and I end up dying.

also: campers. FUCK do I hate campers.

What platform are you using, with PC mouse sensitivity is a key factor as to how good you are.

I had one incident while playing Team Deathmatch on Nuketown. I was at the top of a staircase. Dude walks up. I pop out of doorway and shoot him point-blank range with shotgun. I hear the shot and see my gun fire.

then he knifes me. on the killcam, i popped out and just stood there for at least 2 seconds, making it look like he just knifed one of the dummies propped up around the map.

that IS a lag issue, but a fucking stupid one. your issue...i don't even know. Treyarch dropped the ball on this shit...then again my old roommates complained of the same shit in MW2. and if i'm right, that was a different developer...yes?

Yea well, lag is an issue beyond my power of giving crappy hints I guess. By now you should have figured out what your playstyle is. I myself am someone who doesn't have the patience to stand at one spot for any longer than three seconds and will dash into oblivion afterwards... so submachine guns suit me fairly well(as well as most assault rifles). I don't know whta weapons are available to you, but the FAMAS and ak74u are VERY nOObfriendly, so that should work out. But if you like em or not, that's up to you. my fav weapon is the AUG with a reflex sight, and sleight od hand pro. Also, my number 1 one rule in CoD games: HUG THE WALLS 24/7!!!

Ok I can answer your question 2 ways. The legitimate way and the "LOL I JUST WANT KILLS" way
The way I play is I use the FAL as my main with a red dot site and the strella as my secondary and my perks are lightweight so I can move a bit faster though mostly because I can just jump off hills and live to escape. Slight of hand because im a huge ADS whore and hacker because I hate turning a corner and then getting owned by a sentry gun and then i use flash bangs semtex and claymores but what im getting at is fid your play style and be smart with your classes

Or

The "LOL IM SO PRO" way of playing witch is AKS74 with n00b tube or double tap and either the law/rpg or the ballistics knife then go with either recon/lightweight steady aim/hardened and either marathon/final stand and then just run around never ADS drop shot knife all the time and camp.

way to be helpful brah. Everyone thinks youre super cool because youre too good for black ops.
Yeah, I'll admit to a bit of trolling in that post, but really... why is it so important to some people to be 'good' at this, or any other game? People need to set their priorities is all.

Look, you said you borrowed this game from a friend to get your feet wet with CoD. Black Ops is my first console CoD game, and, coming from a very heavy CS 1.6 and CS:S background of PC FPS, it was pretty difficult to make the transition to sticks, but I stuck with it and I'm holding my own. Everyone is giving you the same advice so you should listen up and realize that it's your negative attitude and assumption that everyone is doing something different than you that is the problem.

Knowing your way around is crucial in any game, not just FPS. If you get lost, then hold up for a second, get your bearings, and move on. You need to slow it down and think. You're not going to get any better looking for a fight. Remember this is only the latest in a slew of CoD games, and many of the people you are facing have been playing for a long time (even some of the shittier ones). Expect that you ARE going to die, so make the most of your time spent alive. Don't waste it making decisions that make you more likely to get shot.

And as to the debate whether you learn more by playing and studying others versus tips and tricks, I believe there is clearly a middle ground. A lot of things are common sense: use cover, don't stay in one spot too long, burst rather than spray, and yes, you can learn a lot about tactics from watching kill cams, too. But, also keep in mind that people learn in different ways. There's nothing wrong with trying to find out more in depth information that you might not have noticed yourself, or get suggestions for loadouts that might be easier to new comers.

TL:DR?
Change your attitude. Slow it down. Relish the kills where you've outsmarted your opponent. Relax and try to have some fun instead of looking for what's wrong.

Pretty simple question for those who play Black Ops online (there will be loads of you, obviously).

How do I get better at this game online? I wanna get a decent experience of it, which is pretty impossible when getting killed in 3 shots by enemies who mysteriously manage to appear right the fuck behind you.

I'm pretty sure it's just a reflex issue, but if it's not there has to be some way to actually get better at this ridiculous game?
Join a Clan where you practice skills and tactics, it will help your reflexes too when you scrim. Best thing you can do.

Play Combat Training.

There is a reason the developers put it in.

WATCH THE KILLCAM. I learned so many things from watching a quick 2 second clip.
