How do I get into the first fallout?

I have made a couple attempts try and play it and I just can't get into it.
first attempt-
I took the jinxed trait and the combat was just really annoying. I found out many mouths later the jixed trait is best taken when you have a high luck. I did not have high luck stats.

second attempt-
I did not take the jinxed trait. I did not locate that first town near the vault and instead ran into junktown at nighttime. I manged to get in despite you are supposedly not allowed to enter the gate at night. then got lost, bored , and stopped playing shortly after that. I never even saw what junktown was like at daytime and I have no clue how you make the time go

the boredom and feeling of being lost during second attempt reminds me how I felt during the beginning of planescape torment before I got it got better. Once planescape tormment got interesting I felt the desire to play it just for the writing. I still felt the gameplay was boring but slogged though it got see an amazing story.

I own both fallout 1 and 2 so if trouble get into fallout again then will give I will give fallout 2 a shot. From my understanding beyond try to get though some place called the temple it should be easier to get into then the first fallout.

The first fallout has a hurdle to get past in the writing. Get the water chip quest done and I would think by then you will be hooked. The water chip is essentially "killing rats in the cellar". Once you make it through that, if you aren't hooked you may not get hooked. Fallout's writing was good for its time compared to the other games out there. It is ok writing but not as great as some people make it out to be.

If you like good writing, it has plenty to offer but know going in that good writing often gets copied in future media. SO I doubt anything in fallout will be anything you haven't seen before. If you want to be "blown away" by the writing, it isn't gonna happen because the game is over 10 years old. It is a well known pinnacle of crpgs. You kind of missed the boat to be "blown away" by it. Too many RPGs over the past 10+ years have used it as inspiration and you may have been blown away by them instead. (Namely Fallout 3 and NV to the ire of many long time fans)

DO you like good writing or do you want to be blown away by writing is what you should really be asking yourself. WIth a follow up question is the gameplay a fair trade off for you? Fallout will probably not blow you away. Hell, I pretty much guarantee it. But it can offer a fun world to explore that is written rather solidly. The gameplay does pick up later but milage will vary. I grew up with cRPGs of that style so I have a bias that I can easily overlook what others from the new generations see as flaws. However, I see flaws in many newer titles that newer generations easily overlook or even hold up on a pedestal.

Get into the mindset of a survivalist. One who needs to walk across a barren and hostile landscape to save his "vault/village". Also, try to look up what the keys do and that shift + clicking anywhere makes your character run.

wonder why new vegas and fallout 3 didnt let you become a porn star haha
That's what mods are for.
Also nude patches and sex mods.

But really, its because those things in a 3d game would get an AO rating slapped on it pretty quick.
As for Fallout, I only tried it after I played Fallout 2, if you like the setting go with FO1, other wise skip it, its just a game.

if you don't like it, try going through the game for a few hours, then judge whether you want to play it more or not. games like fallout take a while before they start growing on you.

or just don't play it. that also works. go play a game that you think is better.

I suggest a time machine. A game pushing almost 20 years is going to be devoid of functionality that while standard today was unheard of back in 1997. So if you try to play today and not have the advantage of nostalgia goggles you will likely find yourself frustrated with even seemingly no brainers that keep you asking Why couldnt they have done this?!?

As someone who frequents GOG, I cannot tell you how many times I would pick up a game because not having a PC until 2000 I felt I missed out on a lot of gaming history, Only to be driven well beyond distraction trying to suffer through some of histories greats. Ive been gaming since there was a gaming and at least for me If I didnt play it at least relevant to its point of release, Its not likely I will have much appreciation for it

Try this. Jinxed + 10 Luck. make a custom character so you can do that. you gave up too early.

now go, my child, create hilarious, wonderful carnage! just worry about Lockpicking, Science, and the weapon type of your choice. post results.

Honestly, fallout 1 is just generally hard for me to get into, as well.

Not so much for any of the design, it's a solid RPG, especially given its age, but no matter what you do you have that annoying time limit hanging over your head like the sword of Damocles. Fallout 2 is much better in that regard. in fact, 2 is better than 1 in most every conceivable way. 1 is worth playing for the lore that future games build upon, but if you're not attached to that, I'd say give 2 a try.

When I went Jinxed with high luck I went Unarmed as otherwise I spent most of my time dropping my weapon or having the bullets fall out or other hilarious things. Jinxed gets better the more powerful your opponents are I found.

The first game had two time limits, one to get the water chip and one to finish the game. The second time limit was removed, in the first patch I think, so once you've gotten the water chip you can take as long as you like. Although if you take too long to finish the game I think you get a lot of bad ending slides where the super mutants have taken over certain areas.

Also both Fallout 1 and 2 have a 13 in game year time limit. I think it's something to do with the way the clock/calendar is programmed. There's virtually no way you'd reach it though, short of leaving the game on when you're not actually using your computer.
