Out of their elbows. Next question?
Well yeah, that's the female ones. The males do it out of their paws; their claws slide back to let them do their business.

I guess some video game design choices just baffle me. Who are the designers worried about offending? Anyone who owns a dog (especially a short-haired dog like the mabari) knows they don't look like that.

How would you interpret that as "obscene" when every dog-owner in the world sees that unremarkable little detail every day? In a video game that doesn't shy away from depicting your party covered in gratuitous bloodsplatter or in sexual situations, Bioware can't be bothered to get basic animal anatomy right?

If you'd have put that in your first post, you'd be halfway to a decent thread.

This made me laugh more than the thread's original question.

OT: I'm not exactly sure. But I don't think it would be a unique case. I'm sure there's plenty of fictional creatures/beings in video games whose digestive systems aren't perfectly explained.

There's a difference between covering something up and modeling/texturing something the general population doesn't care to see. When you see it in real life, you shrug it off as just their body. When you see it in a game, you have to wonder what motivated the developers to put such things into the game. For that reason, it's more distracting to have it in a game than to not.

The animals in Okami all had anuses. It didn't seem to detract from the game at all or be distracting. In God of War a lot of the monsters have nipples and I think the cyclops still have genitals (they just aren't very noticeable) because the devs wanted them to be like real, living creatures, not just things. It doesn't make them weird or too focused. I think it's just squeamishness, they went through so much trouble to model and animate every thing else in that game the fact that the dog doesn't have an anus or a sheath is just a little odd. Maybe he doesn't need a sphincter but the emphasis on him being a male dog makes the fact that he doesn't have a sheath just stupid. It's just a little bit of flesh on his belly near his hindquarters that's all.

My other explanation is that the dog is an after thought because his anatomy is messed up even for a fantasy monster; the jaws and teeth don't work at all. It's kind of like how America's Funniest Home Videos has started censoring infant and toddler nudity; it worries me more that someone can think it's obscene than someone who doesn't really notice it's there at all.

Why do you even want to know this? It seems strange to me.

Anyway my guess is that the developers didn't feel the need to model that particular area.
I agree with this.

And a welcome to you, sir or madam.

OT: It's plainly obvious.
Through their noses, of course.

I'm seeing a Barbara Creed's theory of abjection at work here. I think she would be fascinated. We like sex, it's not humiliating, we don't mind that all the women (even the elderly one) have huge boobies. We don't care that the men have itty-bitty loin cloth underwear, even the ones you don't romance. But we do mind defecation. Why is that? We're not talking about human defecation, its an animal. The OP mentioned that dog owners see that all the time, he didn't mention that most dog owners have to pick it up and do so without much complaint. Seems to be a very selective squeamishness. Ever notice how there is rarely vomit or feces in horror films? At the time of it's release critics focused more on the vomit in The Exorcist than just about anything else.
