I decided to shoot up this thread, simple, list differences between these two games.

I haven't played Terraria, but from what I've seen, the main differences are:

Terraria is 2D.
Terraria is more combat oriented.

It would be easier to ask how they are the same.

They are both miner sims, they both have randomly generated terrain and a similar crafting system. That's about where they end.

The crafting system is a bit different. Saying that you can craft in both games is correct however. I just think Minecraft and Terraria are totally different, factoring away the whole block thing. It's like comparing Minecraft and Motherlode(flash game from years ago.)

They are definietely different.
Terraria has different biomes, enemies, other kinds of items to craft/find (no minecarts or boats, but there are muskets, chandeliers and grappling hooks. That's just to name few.).
Terraria is more fast-paced, and resources are bit easier (in my opinion) to find/gather than in minecraft.
Terraria has more kinds of minerals/materials, yet you can't make pickaxe out of diamond.
Terraria has NPCs that talk and even sell stuff / cure your wounds.
Minecraft has wolves.
Terraria has depth meter; Minecraft has maps.
Terraria has bossfights. Minecraft has portals to the nether. (Terraria does have "the underworld", yet you can just dig to it, instead of making an obsidian portal)
And, as far as I know, Terraria has a bit more items than Minecraft, including all the raw materials. And magic.

...I guess I could point the differences for quite a long time. Also, in Terraria, sand is OP.

Just don't start a "Minecraft / Terraria is better" war. They are different. No better/worse factor. Really.

i personally don't see the connection
minecraft is a 3D world with the main gimmick of the game is building stuff which also has a
minor survival mechanic
terria is a 2D game with main gimmick of the game is combat with a minor creative mechanic

They've got the same kind of genre of a building randomly generated sandbox game feel - but that's it.
Terraria is a hell of a lot more adventure and combat based, with less focus on building and more on decoration - I.E a small room with a few books and chairs etc than a MASSIVE castle - which I haven't seen any of yet.
With minecraft people think 'large scale projects' like massive Arenas, castles and structure, or some wire (redstone) machine. With Terraria it simplifies all that down and just makes it more adventuring.

The 2 are pretty tough to compare... I wish people would stop trying to - it doesn't work, they're the same genre at most.

that's the major two.

OT: Other than these two mentioned above, Terraria really is all about exploring stuff, like Minecraft, just with very different ways of going about it.
From what I can see it's very much inspired by games like Zelda and such, with lots of cool, upgradable items and weapons (including a few things Minecraft would die to have e.g. helmet lamps) and very different monsters.

It also seems like it'd be a real breeze on the PC, since my PC has some difficulty playing online and higher rez games, which will make it an excellent online alternative to Minecraft when my girlfriend and I buy it. ;P

The best thing I have seen so far, is that MC has mods, that offer everything Terraria can do and more. Ive played with mods that add pyramid dungeons, new monsters, monsters that can break down walls to come after you, new weapons that range from battle axes to laser guns, a hardcore mode that includes hunger-thirst-fatigue-3 life limit, NPC villages that you can help to improve grow. Mods add so much more immersion and challenge to MC. In my opinion it makes it blow past what Terraria can offer.

The only thing terraria really took from minecraft is the block destruction/ placement. However, unlike minecraft, that isn't the focus of the game. It just makes the world more dynamic and interesting. Terraria is focused on exploration and combat. It's a hack-and-slash with a creative element. Minecraft is 99% about building things.
