I've been given an assignment by my boss. In essence, how do North Koreans see the US? I tried googling it but all I'm getting is news about how NK is starting nuclear weapons tests?

I believe the official party line is that the U.S. is a imperialistic capitalist hellhole in comparison to their socialist paradise, whether the general population actually believe this or not is another matter, the only ones we get to hear from are the brave few who manage to jump the border into China. Apparently the general population aren't allowed any contact with the outside world and so I imagine rumours and misconceptions are abound.

Essentially they view the United States as their greatest enemy, mainly due to our strong allegiance with South Korea and our many attempts at reconnaissance missions into/near/over North Korea.

There's a popular documentary group called Vice that have put out some videos on North Korea. Hopefully these videos will help you out a bit with North Korea. I'll have them embedded for your convenience.

There's some more as well, but they're more so about sneaking into North Korea, Kim Jong Il's obsession with film-making, and North Korean labor camps. Here's the search list for the others:
http://www.youtube.com/user/vice/search?query=North+Korea

And finally here's a Cracked article (comedy website) about North Korean children's cartoons. Hint: The United States is the enemy in most of them.

Propaganda in North Korea is a huge influence because of the lack of other educational materials available to the people and strength of censorship: http://www.globalpost.com/dispatches/globalpost-blogs/the-rice-bowl/propaganda-cartoon-north-korea-education

Not an expert, but the people of NK have good reason to hate, or at least fear the US, and have had for decades.

You don't need much propaganda to turn your citizens against a nation that (for whatever reason) portrays yours the same way.

There's a full North Korean propaganda video on YouTube. Most of it's a bit boring, but the bit about celebrities and reality TV is golden:

I have a book called "Nothing to Envy" - it's an account of life in North Korea from defectors (and there are many) who come across the border to China and then make it to South Korea later.

The old generation - those who are still alive, at any rate - actually are afraid of the US. They've been drilled in anti-US propaganda so relentlessly that they believe it. North Korea also wasn't the failed state it is today - during the 60's and the 70's, when the USSR was giving aid, it was actually, for a while, richer than the south (if more oppressive). So a lot of the older generation, growing up in relative prosperity, still believe what the party says.

The younger generation doesn't. Although they can't cross the border, they can look over across it and they see the rich development of China. They see that, and they know that their problems aren't due to Uncle Sam - their problems are due to their own government. They smuggle in DVD and DVD players from the border with China and (under threat of being sent to a labour camp), can see what life is like in South Korea. Many North Koreans actually sneak over the border to China and sneak back in with money and food. They know what life is like outside North Korea.

Plus, the North Koreans know they are being lied to. When a nation claims that its leader is a demigod who can perform miracles (literal miracles, like adjusting the weather through his will), your people aren't going to really believe that dreck, especially since they're starving. The North Korean people may not believe the US is good, but they don't believe a single goddamn word their own government says.

The Russians under the USSR didn't. The Chinese under Mao didn't. I've talked to many people who have formerly lived in Communist states - they never believed the state propaganda for even a second.

I can't remember which documentries it was (it was on Channel 4), in that one the film crew visit their history museum and it pretty much potray the US soldiers as some kind of a devil.

The painting had those soldiers doing cruel acts like tossing babies into the river and killing them without mercy.

I suppose if you want to find this specific docementry, it had the salvation doctors who were sent to help them cure of this eye problem (grey cloud like goo cover the inside of the eye due to malnutrition), This doctor work round the clock to cure everyone he can as he was only there for a short time and there were hundred of North Korean with that problem. The treated patients were blindfolded for their eyes to recover and one by one when it time to removed it, they all praise Kim Jong Il

Also in that documentry, one of the photographers was send back because he lend on his back when he took one of the statue of Kin Jong Il which the North Koren who was with them took that as a great offences.

Lastly there this-

To answer your question, something like this:

It's difficult to verify, though, due to the difficulty of finding north koreans who are both able and willing to talk to foreigners.

Even though that Space Britain.

I couldn't tell you though I've never been and don't plan on going until there's a significantly lower risk of public execution as a spy.

What, were you expecting someone from north korea to post here? We all know what the goverment of NK thinks, but if you're asking about the people, then I don't think anyone outside of NK knows.

Propaganda, maybe. True? Definitely.

At least as far as I'm concerned. Does that mean I'm a communist?

I've always thought that North Korea would think of the US in much the same way as Caesar's Legion would think of the NCR.

It's impossible to know what the average North Korean thinks about Freedomland, but their government sees us as their main enemy. Moreso than South Korea.

I think if you're looking for North Koreans on the internet to get opinions from you're not going to find any. From what I understand the country has little to no telecommunications infrastructure, and what they do have is used solely by the government.

Your professor may have sent you on a fool's errand to be honest; known conditions within North Korea are at best murky. Finding honest opinions from its populace on the US is likely nonexistent.

I have to agree with you on the video, those North Koreans have spotted how shit our TV shows are becoming.

Maybe for now, but if the news about their nuclear tests is accurate, it'll soon look like this to them:

Potentially so but they'd have to be pretty stupid to do that. I don't think any other Nato country would respond positively. Nor would China. Or Russia.

Seriously North Korea might be run by crazies but they can't be stupid enough to entice mass extermination of any and all armed forces they may possess.
