I'm curious about how those little touch lamps work - those that turn on or off or possibly dim when you poke them. I've heard that it's due to static electricity, but nothing else. How do they do it?

They are sexually stimulated by human contact, their instinctive reaction to this is to glow brighter, in an attempt to entice you into feeling it up again (similar to a moth being attracted to a light, but with amorous lamps).

Heat sensitive, I have one, try and touch it with the sleeve of your clothes or anything other than your body and it won't light up.

they feed off of your energy as a living entity... essencially every time you touch one.. it steals part of your soul, but only a tiny tiny part... you hafta touch one several million times before you're fully drained...

they're made in an alternate dimension by evil magical engineers who like to kill us in unique and interesting ways...

no seriously, we're all doomed...

There's a little man who lives in the lamp and listens for your touch, silly.

I've just looked it up, and it says that it feeds on the static electricity in your body. The lamp is only the larval stage. Once it feeds on enough touches it spins a cocoon and becomes a pedestrian traffic light, developing the ability to show two colours. This is important for mating, as potential partners go for colorfully-lit lights.
Regional variations in shape help those studying in the field of traffic lights to make distinctions between species.

Indeed. Those 'Inside The' lamps are really offensive.

Or to just make it so you don't have to re-navigate all over the place: static electricity from your body that jumps onto it like a switch.

EDIT: Cock, I was Ninja'd. (Slow reaction)

Hold an icecube to your finger for several minutes, and while still cold, dry it off and touch the lamp.

I bet it still turns on.

Its not a heat effect in the vast majority of cases, or else being next to a window in the summer time or a heater in the winter could turn it on.

As the let me google that for you guys explained, its capacitative.

Sir, this is worth six threads.

You are lucky to have this one.

Back in my day we didn't get to learn the innermost secrets of touch lamps without having a bit more RESPECT for our wiser, more attractive elders.

Now go bake me a cake.

Considering you've got half a dozen posts and he's Gone Gonzo, I'd have to say that's fairly inaccurate.
