I'm sitting on the bus over to he airport right now and to be frank i'm incredibly bored because of terribly slow internet connection and a forgetful mind that wouldn't let me charge up my DS before i left home.

With all this travelling this season brings with it i'm curious: How does the Escapist spend their time on the go, be it by bus, boat, plane or car?

I randomly strike up conversations with strangers. However, I do not do this as myself. I assume an alternate identity and try to stick to it for as long as possible during the conversation.

It makes for very interesting dialogues and a quick date or two if you're looking for that kind of thing. Usually, you never see the people you meet in transit again so its a fertile playground for anyone who can pretend.

Walking or driving, with music. On a plane, either a PSP or watch a movie. I wish I could just sleep on planes but I never can, unless there's like 3 seats at the back of the plane where I can just lay down.

Me? I do something similar to this:

Sometimes I get weird looks from people but... fuck people. Why should I care about what strangers on the bus/train/plane think of me?

Depends on the method of travel. I worked in Boston many years ago, which involved about 1.5 hours of train/subway travel each way. I would typically read or listen to music, or just talk to a friend of mine who also worked in the city if he happened to be on the same train. This was before ipods and tablets. I had a laptop, but it was so not worth lugging around, because this was also before Wi-Fi.

Can't read in the car though. Makes me sick. Haven't been on a plane in a while, but if I recall, I'm okay reading on a plane.

I have moved a fair few time in my life by car. So long trips in the car I can do sitting on my head (Breaks only every 4-6hours for a few days). I didn't read and no handheld (this was in the 90s). I found sleeping was the biggest user of time (in those day I could sleep whenever). General talk & games/ riddles were common with music on at the same time. I found away to get into a mindset on long distance travel. The small things made the trip enjoyable and interesting. Shoes & socks off, wind in your hair, pretending mario was running next to the car jumping over the fences and powerlines (Imagination). Now I have added reading.

I can't read on a bus or in a car, I get sick, which sucks. So I try to listen to some music and take a nap.

On a train or plane, however, I can and do read.

Usually I listen to music, or if I'm feeling like a crazy badass mofo I play a game on my iPhone. I haven't taken my DS anywhere with me in years. I have barely any games for it, and it's stuff I've played a million times before anyway. And why bother dragging around a extra device which is bigger than my phone, and only has one function? My phone can do the same thing anyway, and there's a much wider range of stuff on it so I'll take that.

I bring my DSi since i'm one of the few people left on this planet without an iPhone (wished for one for Christmas), but Pokemon is pretty fun no matter how many times i play it (i'm just one of those people). Another reason i have for dragging it along is that i'm going home for no longer than the holiday season which will be spent sharing both room and TV with my younger brother. I need something to do for when it's his turn or whatever (So professor Layton's gonna be a life-saver!)

I get drunk, or I travel with a friend. If I go by my own I'm pretty fucked, I never take music or things to read, and there's only so much mobile internet browsing I can handle; I sit there staring, bored as hell.
