mwahaha nothing beats my "assasination" technique from fallout new vegas! plant 10 c4 peices near the target, laugh like a maniac and then push the button as you watch them fly to outer space and asphyxiate, causing you to laugh even more and no one has a clue how it happens!

Depends on the game, to be honest. Although a hold person spell followed by repeated blasts of doom usually suffices for most foes.

If it doesnt, I break out the wands of fireball.

I prefer taking out all the guards as stealthily as I can, then cornering them, so there's no escape. Hence why I loved AC2 and desperately need Brohood.

Depending on the target and how heavily they're defended, either a quick stab in the back or a shot to the back of the head with a silenced gun. Quick, clean, quiet.

poison or maybe remote explosives. Something more detached than simply shooting/slashing but that still requires me to get close at at least some point. Lovely

Most often, I will yell "look behind you!", then pull down their pants and push them in a pit of lava.

Sillently knock all the guards unconsious, throw them all on a neat little pile and take out the target with deadly force if required.

Then I just imagine how the target's remaining guards or even his succesor sifts through the pile of unconsious guardsmen and sees I didn't even need to kill a single one to take out the boss. (I have a vivid imagination)
