How do you beat imperial guard?

My friend and I play Warhammer and I can't ever seen to beat his Imperial Guard army with my Orcs, my only advantage is close combat and even then with his numbers it seems statistically impossible against his ungodly numbers. Any advice for very small engagement troop battles? Would it help to expand my army or would that just increase his advantage?

Buy (or make) some hills and stuff to put between you and him. I used to play 40k about five or six years ago and had a friend with the same kind of "I'll just spend all the game in one place and shoot my big lasers" Imperial Guard army, Whereas I had a infantry heavy dark eldar army. I gave up using the transports (were they called Raiders?) completely since they could be destroyed pretty damn easily and just moved up behind as much cover (or even better still, something which obscures your units completely) as possible.

Orks are smart enough to use cover?

Problem with that is the bassilk and its indirect fire.

Maybe it's a really steep hill and they can't be arsed going up it?

As for the getting shot to peices by indirect things (or anything used by the guard if I remember the game that well) maybe you could just get a long enough table and wait at the other end, claiming your troops can't see any enemies, so they've decided to set up camp.
(I did that once against previously mentioned friend, eventually he got bored and moved his tanks forward, then I died).

Probably not but then an ork isn't leading the charge is it.

And if you're using 5th Ed rules (which we all should be) then indirect fire isn't as "accurate" as it used to be anyway.

Yes the orks can beat the IG, certainly it's not as easy as sitting with a bunch of XV88's on the end of a table but if we wanted nothing but easy then why would we play?

Your better bet is to head over to the dakka forums and ask there, but a quick cover off on my own IG busting tactics:

Kommando's, a couple of dread's or killer kans, a rocket squad, and mobs and mobs of boys. Shokk attack guns are great now too. With enough boyz spaced at maximum 2" coherency you can leg it across the field real quick. Make use of the new "run" rules for infantry. Once you get all those choppa's into close combat you should have no issue mashing him up.

This applies to small engagements - as you get smaller you remove the heavy support and the elites. Max out your boys (while there are more than 12 in a squad they can be considered fearless remember) and go from there.

It's odd I never really have that much of a problem with imperial guard but then again I always have aP5 weapons. With orks maybe you should invest in some transports to get closers up, i wouldn't bother with bikes though. But then again I cant be of that much use since a lot of things have changed with the 5th edition so I've pretty mcuh given up on 40K, until they update daemon hunters which would be enough to get me buying again. They are now using the oldest codex in the game and the only one of the only armies left with no plastic models, plus a bunch of grey knight special rules have actually been made pointless but the new update.

deep strike tactics work too too, (not sure if Orks have much in that respect tho)

i struggled against my brother's IG until i decided i wasn't going to deploy anything except an extremely well hidden scout squad with a teleport homer. 2nd turn, 2 Terminator Assault squads teleport into cover, within assualt range. 3rd turn, everything else shows up (and mostly gets killed) but my 10 terminators have, by this time, taken out half his shooting force, command squad, and heavy weapons teams, and the snipers in the scouts have taken out another heavy team. then my dreadnought landed.

But, as i said, i'm not sure what capabilities Orks have for that kind of situation

when I say small engagement I mean 32 boyz and a Warboss against about 50 marines and anything we have was bought like two years ago so I doubt it's fifth edition, is the new rule set worth buying? Or even the new codex for that matter?

Whether it's worth it or not you have to play those rules if you ever go to tournaments. The new codex definitely. I still use my 3rd edition Ork Codex from time to time but stuff like Deffkoptas are just awesome.

If he's using marines (and getting 50 of them) you're playing a severely imbalanced game. Work out points and play that way. 500 points games are a good place to start. Or do it force org. chart. 1 HQ, 2 Troops each.

If you've got more Marines on the table than Orkz then your obviously not playing rules tight. Orkz should outnumber every other faction bar IG and Tyranids. In those cases it should be a close call too.

As for dealing with IG, I'd say use cover, or be a bastard and insist on city fight/the old Jungle rules(if their still valid) you should be able to close the distance to his troops and make the overwhelming numbers of IG a burden.
Fighta-Bomberz are good I've heard but no one I know has used/faced them.

use zagstruk and no more than ten stormboyz, i used that with two mobs of about 15 boyz both had nobs with power klaws and eavy armour, and i managed to take out 4 tanks in 1 turn, apart from that i got slaughtered by heavy weapons fire
