I?m curious?how do you define environmentalism?

I know some people define it as a buzzword thrown around by politicians to generate some cash in their pocket/for their constituents. I know other people define it as living nude in the forest somewhere to become one with nature.

I take what I call the Teddy Roosevelt approach to environmentalism, a sort of stewardship approach. I think we have a responsibility to preserve nature to a certain extent. Don?t forget that Roosevelt founded the first national parks in the US. He clearly had a love of and respect for nature and the outdoors. But don?t forget also that Roosevelt was an avid hunter. He was an advocate of conservation, but not for the sake of conservation. He believed that we should take advantage of the bounties and resources in the world around us. I pretty fall in those lines. I think that we need to be very careful how we treat what is left of the undeveloped, natural world. On the other hand, I don?t think that we need to be hands off.

What do other people think?

Preserving and protecting areas of natural abundance and a general attempt to stop unnecessary damage to life and habitat.

Now that djpuppylove789 has said that, how can you not agree with that?

Teddy cannot be denied. The TR approach is the greatest way to do it; no one will be motivated to environmentalism until it makes them some sweet moolah.

At least in the consumeristic world of capitalism.

Mostly, I define it as a religion fill in for people who are too sophisticated elite to worship a god, but want to have a crazy spiritual aspect and believe in whatever claim they are told by someone no matter how ridiculous.

I would like it to be the rational and conservative use of natural resources, rational being defined as effective and conservative being defined as either replenishment (planting trees on a lumber harvest site) or limited usage to make sure we have enough for later.

I couldn't have stated my own opinion better than this one.

I'm a capitalist first and foremost, but my "carbon footprint" is lower than most people's. My ultra-liberal buddy from San Francisco once said to me, "How do you do it? You don't give a rip about Save the Earth, you've written that Earth Day is just another way for communists to celebrate Lenin's birthday without being overt about it, you vote Republican...yet you're doing more to stop global warming than even I am. What the fuck?"

My reply: "Resources cost money. That's reason enough not to squander them and it's a lot easier than being self-righteous about it."

Environmentalism -

Protecting the environment we live in to maintain an ecological balance that doesn't lead to the destruction of all life on the planet (and to preserve all species within reason). They use the law in effective measures, and maintain their sanity.

Number of Ecologically Conscious People Who Actually Follow This: 40%

Extreme Environmentalism (i.e. Environmentardism) -

Protecting all living things to such an extent that no one anywhere can do anything because it would eventually lead to a change in the environment. This apparently gives them the right to throw paint on people, strap themselves to trees and otherwise break the law. FOR NATURE BITCHES!!!

Number of Ecologically Conscious People Who Actually Follow This: 60%

So we can officially conclude that most annoying, tree-huggin, insane environmentalists are actually of the EXTREME faction, and therefore are retards.

I think that is a very interesting point of view. Although I never have allied myself with a party (I consider myself a classical liberal), I tend to lean to the right. Yet people seem surprised that every day I sort through stuff as I throw it away into garbage and recycling, I walk around town instead of drive, etc. Little things.

Someone who is obsessed with the preservation of natural resources and reducing damage to our ecosystem to an almost dangerous degree. You can't spell environmental without 'mental'.

(I know that was terrible, just felt compelled to add it there)

Environmentalism (at least the "Al Gore version") is a essential a fad that becomes popular when the economy is good and abandoned whenever the economy goes bad since then we actually have REAL problems that need solving.
